    Episode 24: Lion Mode Leadership 3 – You Don't Need a Title…

So who's the leader? Do we know by the title, or is there another way of figuring out this age-old question. In this episode, ReNeita and I go over the 6 principles of leadership found in the book, "You Don't Need a Title to Be a Leader" by New York Timesbest-selling author Mark Sanborn. Mastering these 6 principles will put you on the right track to exceptional leadership, whether you have the title or not.

    Episode Outline

    Official beginning – 3:04

    The Basic 5 (for leaders) – 6:20

    • Keep students in front of doors/people
    • Keep books in their bag
    • Match students with territory (scout)
    • Work with your students
    • Pray

A helpful phrase to remember the basic 5 is the following, "Canvassing books; where you work, I work; let's pray."

    • Canvassing: Are my students canvassing? Are they knocking doors/talking to people?
    • Books: Do all of my students have enough books in their bag?
    • Where you work: Have you found the right territory? Are your students matched with the territory?
    • I work: Are you working with your students?
    • Let's pray: Are you praying for your students? Are you praying for yourself?

    The 6 Principles of Leadership – 18:16

    • The Power of Self-Mastery
      • "The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; but the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness." SC 43.3
      • Recommended reading: Help in Daily Living (Ministry of Healing chapter 40)

    • The Power of Focus
      • "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." Proverbs 16:3
      • "God gives opportunities; success depends upon the use made of them. The openings of Providence must be quickly discerned and eagerly entered." Messages to Young People 147.3

    • Power with People
      • Your capability as a leader isn't measured by what you can do, rather by what you can accomplish with others.
      • Your new focus is developing your students. As you develop them, your own skills we be developed
      • Manager vs Leader (taken directly from Mark Sanborn's book "You Don't Need a Title to be a Leader)
        • Managers have employees. Leaders have followers.
        • Managers react to change. Leaders create change.
        • Managers communicate. Leaders persuade.
        • Managers try to be heroes. Leaders make heroes of everyone.
        • Managers exercise power over people. Leaders exercise power with people.

    • The Power of Persuasive Communication
      • Poor communication leads to poor performance

    • The Power of Execution
      • "Long delays tire the angels. It is even more excusable to make a wrong decision sometimes than to be continually in a wavering position; to be hesitating, sometimes inclined in one direction, then in another. More perplexity and wretchedness result from thus hesitating and doubting than from sometimes moving too hastily. GW 133.4
      • I have been shown that the most signal victories and the most fearful defeats have been on the turn of minutes. God requires promptness of action. Delays, doubtings, hesitation, and indecision frequently give the enemy every advantage." GW 134.1 (Gospel Workers)

    • The Power of Giving
      • Not just monetarily, but of your time, and of yourself.
      • "Happiness that is sought from selfish motives, outside of the path of duty, is ill-balanced, fitful, and transitory; it passes away, and the soul is filled with loneliness and sorrow; but there is joy and satisfaction in the service of God." Steps to Christ 124.2
      • "And the effort to bless others will react in blessings upon ourselves…This is the highest honor, the greatest joy, that it is possible for God to bestow upon men. Those who thus become participants in labors of love are brought nearest to their Creator." SC 79.1

    Review

Pray for God to give you the 6 powers of:

    • Self-Mastery
    • Focus
    • People

    Episode Outline

    Official beginning– 2:58

    The Transition– 28:00

    • Understand that everything you do has a positive or negative impact on your program.
      • How you dress, your music choices, how you talk to one student can affect how a completely different student reacts to you, how you treat the low sellers, and how you treat the high sellers, when you show up to worship what vibes are you bringing? How do you communicate to the group?
      • Your reputation is the most expensive thing in the world, because once it's gone, its hard or nearly impossible to buy back.
        • Proverbs 22:1 "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold."
        • "The largest share of life's annoyances, its heartaches, its irritations, is due to uncontrolled temper. In one moment, by hasty, passionate, careless words, may be wrought evil that a whole lifetime's repentance cannot undo. Oh, the hearts that are broken, the friends estranged, the lives wrecked, by the harsh, hasty words of those who might have brought help and healing!" MYP 135.1

    • Rely more on Christ

    The Mission – 38:13

What is the mission of the leader?

    • Set the atmosphere of your program
      • What are the vibes in your program? Chill, safe, fun, happy, spiritual, spiritually safe, champion, confident, winner, equality or stressed, fear, boredom, depressed, not spiritual, spiritual abuse, struggle, distrust, favoritism
      • "Angels work harmoniously. Perfect order characterizes all their movements. The more closely we imitate the harmony and order of the angelic host, the more successful will be the efforts of these heavenly agents in our behalf. If we see no necessity for harmonious action, and are disorderly, undisciplined, and disorganized in our course of action, angels, who are thoroughly organized and move in perfect order, cannot work for us successfully. They turn away in grief, for they are not authorized to bless confusion, distraction, and disorganization. All who desire the cooperation of the heavenly messengers, must work in unison with them. Those who have the unction from on high, will in all their efforts encourage order, discipline, and union of action, and then the angels of God can co-operate with them. But never, never will these heavenly messengers place their indorsement upon irregularity, disorganization, and disorder." —Testimonies for the Church 1:649, 650. ChS 75.3

    • Cast the vision
      • Characteristics of a great vision: simple, clear, ambitious.

    • Make it happen
      • What do I need to do to accomplish a-z?
      • What can you do? What can you delegate?
        • Who's doing worships?
        • Who's cooking?
        • Who's planning activities?
        • Who's doing announcements?
        • Who's doing training?
        • YOU CAN'T DO IT ALL

    Nugget

"Joshua was now the acknowledged leader of Israel. He had been known chiefly as a warrior, and his gifts and virtues were especially valuable at this stage in the history of his people. Courageous, resolute, and persevering, prompt, incorruptible, unmindful of selfish interests in his care for those committed to his charge, and, above all, inspired by a living faith in God—such was the character of the man divinely chosen to conduct the armies of Israel in their entrance upon the Promised Land."

The Leader whom God chose to overthrow the Midianites occupied no prominent position in Israel. He was not a ruler, a priest, or a Levite. He thought himself the least in his father's house. But God saw in him a man of courage and integrity. He was distrustful of himself and willing to follow the guidance of the Lord. God does not always choose for His work men of the greatest talents, but He selects those whom He can best use. "Before Honor is humility." Proverbs 15:33. The Lord can work most effectually through those who are most sensible of their own insufficiency, and who will rely upon Him as their leader and source of strength. He will make them strong by uniting their weakness to His might, and wise by connecting their ignorance with His wisdom.
