About Cameron Herold - The CEO Whisperer & Business Growth Guru
My father groomed me to be an entrepreneur.
I grew up in a small town in Northern Canada and when my father, an entrepreneur, figured out that I wasn’t going to fit into what they were teaching in school, (because of my severe ADD), he taught me to hate a job and love creating companies that employed others.
By 18, I’d already had 14 different little businesses and I knew I loved money, loved entrepreneuring and I loved business. By 20 years old I owned a franchise business painting houses and had twelve employees.
I spent my twenties and early 30’s heading up 3 large businesses and coaching over 120 entrepreneurs. (One of them was Kimball Musk, Elon Musk’s brother. I was a reference for their first round of funding in 1995).
Then when I was 35 years old, came the opportunity of a lifetime...
My friend Brian Scudamore and I were in an EO forum together. Brian had a small company that hauled junk-away for people. He’d seen me grow my other businesses as either a VP or COO so he asked me if I would coach him, and so I did. After about six weeks, however, Brian says, “Cameron, I can’t do the things you’re teaching me. Can you come and work for me?” So I joined the company.
I walked in with a laptop and a banker’s box with some files (It was the first laptop in the company). I sat down and said, “Let’s build this.”
Our Big Hairy Audacious Goal was to create a globally admired brand.
When I arrived there were 12 franchises and I was the 14th person. During my 6.5 years as the COO, I ran everything except IT and finance. It was an epic, in the trenches experience. Brian was the visionary. My job was to solve problems, engineer systems, shape and publicize the brand, and create a great culture that could also rapidly scale. It was hard as hell, but I was in heaven. The company was 1-800-GOT-JUNK?.
In my six years as COO, I took us from 2 million to 106 million. We were operating in four countries, 330 cities and named as the number two company in Canada people desired to work for. I considered that to be one of my greatest accomplishments because I believe culture is everything.
One day, I stepped off a stage after presenting at Verne Harnish’s, Scaling Up conference, when a guy approached me and said, “Oh, my God, you’re Cameron!” I said, “Yeah.” “I thought it was a saying!” he replied. “Everybody’s been saying, ‘I need a Cameron.’ I didn’t know Cameron was a person!” I laughed and informed him that it was my guess that people meant, “Every CEO needs a great COO.”
Knowing the deep truth of this, in 2016, I founded the COO Alliance when I realized that there were no peer groups for one of the most crucial roles in the company – the Chief Operating Officer/2nd in command.
For me, COO Alliance is the perfect vehicle for what has long driven me; my dad groomed me to be an entrepreneur and was always there to advise me on how to make my dreams happen.
I’m an entrepreneur through and through, and now I wake up excited to do the same for others. So I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from tree.
