Grace Reformed Church

The Non-Impressive Roster | Genesis 11

Listen Later

This week we finished up Genesis 11 and stepped into the opening of Abraham's story, and along the way we asked a simple but important question: why does God choose the people he chooses? We looked at how Abraham wasn't a righteous man when God called him. He came from a family that worshiped false gods, and Scripture is clear that his righteousness came entirely through faith, not through anything he did. That's the same gospel we see all the way back with Adam and Eve, and it's the same gospel offered to us.

We also traced a pattern that runs through the whole Bible: God repeatedly works through the weak, the barren, and the overlooked. Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah, the mother of Samson, and even Elizabeth in the New Testament were all barren women God used to bring about His purposes. That pattern is a reminder that our value in the kingdom was never about our strength, our credentials, or what we bring to the table. It's about being chosen and used in spite of our brokenness, not because of our impressiveness.

From there we talked honestly about what that means for the people in our own lives who feel unseen: mothers doing unwitnessed work, fathers who measure their worth by their paycheck, single people who feel like their season doesn't count, anyone who looks at their life and wonders how God could ever use it. We also talked about the danger of isolating ourselves in our brokenness instead of letting the church carry burdens together, and closed by considering what it looks like to hold onto hope, not because life gets easier, but because Christ is the one making all things new.
