The most shocking thing about my discussion with former Army Commander Mike Jeffery was how strikingly similar his challenges were in 2000  as they are today. On this episode, I’m joined by Sheldon Fernandez. Born and raised in Vaughn, Ontario to Anglo-Indian parents, Sheldon had a mix of interests growing up with computers and athletics being the dominant themes. With a little nudge from his folks, he applied to the University of Waterloo and was accepted into the demanding Computer Engineering program. The university’s famous co-op program was instrumental in starting him on his entrepreneurial journey. This started in New York City, but he was adamant he wanted to have an impact in Canada. He came home and has been a part of building companies ever since, including the artificial intelligence company, Darwin AI. Additionally, he took a sabbatical to finish a Master’s in theology, volunteered in Nairobi, Kenya, and took creative writing at Oxford. We cover a wide range of topics from technology to philosophy.

On this episode, I’m joined by Alaina Mundy. A descendant from someone who fought on the Plains of Abraham, Alaina grew up in a military family and tried to do something other than the family business after high school. It was not to be. She joined the military as a admin clerk in the Air Force and loved it. Her passion for her new profession was grounded in her ability to help people everyday.  She eventually became an officer and continued to push the pace at work always wanting to add value.

After experiencing some issues with coordination, she reluctantly went to the hospital and was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Not wanting this to define her, she applied to be one of our Invictus Warriors and competed in Dusseldorf where she won two gold medals.

On this episode, I’m joined by four time CFL Grey Cup Champion, Tim Fleiszer. Born and raised in Montreal, Tim grew up with two dominant environments - medicine and sports. His mother was a child psychologist and father a trauma surgeon. On the sports side, his father was an accomplished university athlete and the physician for the Montreal Canadians and Alouettes. A multi-sport athlete, Tim chose the athletics route and eventually landed on football as his path to professional sports.

After a decade in the CFL, he decided to move into the world of consulting and sports management. In his post-football journey, he committed some of his time to the U.S. based Concussion Legacy Foundation to help his friend and founder Chris Nowinski. When the Foundation expanded to Canada, Tim took on the role of Executive Director. In addition to looking at the effects of concussions on athletes, the Foundation has started Project Enlist in Canada to look at service related concussions on our military personnel.
