Dr. Kelly Flanagan is an author, speaker, podcaster, licensed clinical psychologist, and co-founder of Artisan Clinical Associates in Naperville, IL. He blogs regularly at drkellyflanagan.com. His writing has been featured in Reader’s Digest, and he has appeared on the TODAY Show and in The Huffington Post. In 2017, Kelly published Loveable: Embracing What Is Truest About You, So You Can Truly Embrace Your Life, and it debuted as the #1 New Release in Interpersonal Relations on Amazon. He is the host of The Loveable Podcast. Kelly is married to another clinical psychologist named Kelly, and they have three children who are in ninth, fifth, and third grade.

This week we sit-down with one of the authors of this book Happy Together: Using the Science of Positive Psychology to Build Love that Lasts Suzann Pileggi-Pawleski she also has a Master of Applied Positive Psychology degree who works as a freelance writer and well-being consultant specializing in the science of happiness and its effects on health and relationships.

She gives “Romance and Research” (TM) workshops around the world with James and she writes the "Science of Well-being" column for Live Happy, where she is also a contributing editor. Previously, she directed award-winning media relations campaigns for Fortune 500 clients and worked as a publicist at Radio City Music Hall and a producer for The Joan Rivers Show.

A year ago or so Sam listened to this book Happy Together: Using the Science of Positive Psychology to Build Love that Lasts when she was on a road trip. She liked it but felt like many of the concepts didn’t sink in as much as she would have liked. She recently reread it while doing some more research for the second edition of our book Bigger Love which we’re also going to release under a new name - to be announced. Part of why she read it was because it was also written by a happily married couple like their own book. Unlike Paddy and Sam, they are both scholars who work in the field of Positive Psychology - so this is not only their experience but also some of the science around love and happiness.

This week Sam and Paddy sit-down and talk about something so minute that it can ruin your relationship. You're probably thinking, WHAT, how can something so minute ruin love? 

Sam and Paddy talk about the rule on how to judge if something is big enough to pick a fight over, or if you should just let it go. So, if you and your partner have ever fought over something stupid...which we all have...this episode is for you.

Dr. Amy Muise’s research focuses on understanding how couples can maintain happier relationships and have more fulfilling sex lives over time. She uses dyadic and longitudinal research methods and analyses (i.e., daily experience studies, multi-level modeling) to understand how sexual processes unfold to impact relationship well-being in the context of couples’ daily lives as well as over the course of time as relationships grow and develop.

Dr. Muise is interested in understanding these processes not only when couples are doing well, but also when they are navigating relationship transitions, such as the transition to parenthood, or coping with a clinical sexual issue, such as low sexual desire.

Sam is a super fan of their guest Dr. Amy Muise …. As they are working on the second edition of our book Bigger Love, Sam's been getting really into not just what people say about relationships but the people who are studying them with science. Dr. Amy Muise is one of her new go-to experts. She runs the Sexual Health & Relationships Lab (aka the SHaRe lab) where they focus on research relating to sex and happiness in long-term romantic relationships.

Dr. Amy is a renowned social psychologist whose CV - that’s what they call a resume in most other parts of the world - it is 35 pages long highlighting all of the publications and awards and publicity she’s received for her research including The Today Show, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine.

What she is sharing with Sam and Paddy today isn’t just her experience or her opinion … which if you dig deep on many, many books and podcasts regarding relationships are simply someone’s opinion or experience … but on scientific studies and actual evidence.

Often times as an individual who is going through a "self-help journey" we feel like our significant other has to be on that same journey. "If I go see Tony Robbins, then my partner needs to and they need to get the same thing out of it that I do." -- This just isn't the case. 

In this weeks episode Sam and Paddy sit down and discuss how it's our individual journeys of growth that help us grow together as a couple. Instead of forcing someone to do something they don't want to do, we must embrace them on their journey. Often times it is the couple that are outwardly different that are stronger.

So, we got a call last year to speak at a conference in San Francisco for this year and we had a call with the leader of the conference and founder of the organization called iMater Now, Fernando. We really liked the guy and what he’s putting out in the world and we offered to have him and his wife on our podcast….this was back when we were still doing our Doggy Style podcast and only interviewing happy couples. But with the new format and The Not So Perfect Couple podcast where we’re primarily interviewing experts and then doing shows with just Paddy and I, I was a little worried if this was going to fit. But WOW! After the first five minutes I fell in love with this couple. They have great stories and great advice about dealing with difficult emotions and communication.

Fernando is an attorney turned author, podcaster, speaker and founder of iMater Now, an organization working to help attorneys and professionals live healthier and happier lives. They are hosting a live event in San Francisco August 17th and we’re honored to be speaking there! Elizabeth is a PhD candidate at University of California Davis and has a couple of entrepreneurial projects in the works we’ll hear about.
