It's the first episode of a brand new year and like clockwork here once again are our favourite movies of the last 12 months. It's been another strange year for movies, despite a far healthier calendar of releases at the big screen, more streaming options, narrowing theatrical windows and a decline in living standards have made it difficult for people to make the effort anymore, while some movies ended up skipping the format entirely.

But we're not here to complain, instead sit back and enjoy over an hour of our picks of 2022. We're even counting down from 10 this time, with a few honourable mentions to round things off. Next week, you guessed it, will be our Top TV of 2022!

While Box office receipts have so far failed to return to pre-pandemic heights the small screen continues to thrive. With a summer dominated by Stranger Things and yet more entires in the Star Wars and Marvel canon, how could we possibly top that? The answer? Not one but two enormous high budget fantasy epics. We're back to Westeros AND Middle Earth. And how can we possibly process this? Well, by unfairtly comparing them of course... All this and we haven't mentioned that there's yet ANOTHER streaming service in town, bringing it with it one of the best new Star Trek shows for quite some time and whole lot more besides...

In the interest of full discretion this episode was recorded back in May, but has there really been much better on since. James Gunn's Suicide Squad spin-off had no right to be this good, blending satire and outright hilarity to glorious effect. And then there's the Ben Stiller difrected Severance, who mad sci-fi concept not only justified every episode, but probably added up to most successful first season of television for quite some time, solidifying Apple TV+ as a streaming service too far, but one we can't be without.

New year, New Movies & New TV. That we know about anyway.

On this week (month?)'s episode we're going through the things we're most excited about that are due to surface on a screen of some size in the next 11 months (or slightly less).

Highlights include a new prequel series for Game of Thrones, the return of Ewan McGregor's take on the Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi, a new Batman movie and yet another tidal-wave of Marvel hitting both cinemas and the ever growing behemoth that is Disney+

And who can forget Avatar 2, which might actually see the light of day in a year full of long delayed treasures. We can but hope at least.

Even with production scheduled blown off course by covid, the floodgates couldn't hold back the inevitable tidal wave of TV.

So once again it's that time of year when we look back on the year that was and which shows were particular highlights of the past 12 months.

It's no surprise that Netflix's The Witcher series features once again after a year away in COVID jail, nor Disney's most recent MCU offering, Hawkeye, after an incredibly strong year of original programming. Apple TV has also been fighting for our time with For All Mankind, See & Foundation, while HBO (via NowTV/Sky) continues to pile on hits like The White Lotus. And who can forget the insantiy of Squid game!?!... Oh what a year it has been!

Well 2021 was another funny old year for the movies wasn't it?

With cinemas closed for the first third of the year, premium video on demand became almost a given for most theatrical releases, whilst Netflix continued to deliver blockbusters and oscar-bait in equal measure.

We saw the Marvel stretch the credibility of the MCU to it's absolute lengths with it's belated Black Widow film and highly inclusive Eternals, while on a happier note, Denis Villeneuve's Dune finally came out and people actually went to see it, despite it going on HBOMax day 1, meaning part 2 is now confirmed for 2023!

More importantly though, which films made our Top 5s? All this and you know the drill... enjoy!
