The Novel Tea Podcast

Emily and Alexandra have recently read a fantasy book – that’s popular! – and that they love! gasp In this episode, they dig into these two novels, what they like about them, and why they struggle with other works in the genre.

Welcome to our second special interest video. This time Emily interviews Alexandra about one of her pet topics: the under appreciation of the arts and humanities. Yes, this is a whole hour of Alexandra absolutely losing it over this topic.

In this episode, Emily and Alexandra discuss a few books with marketing problems. What happens when the marketing doesn’t match the book? We take a stab at hypothesizing why these choices were made and we put on our editor hats to try to improve them. Please note there are spoilers for the books in this episode.

In this episode, Emily and I compare Dracula and Carmilla, the earliest novels about Vampires in the English language. Even though Brahm Stoker was heavily influenced by Sheridan La Fenu, he took the vampire in an entirely new direction that continues to inspire us today! We take a look at the fears each of these monsters represent and the strengths and weaknesses of these narratives.

Important note: In this episode we discuss themes of sex, sexuality, assault, and abuse. Please listen with caution.

This month, Emily and Alexandra discuss their favorite Jane Austen novel, Persuasion. Written at the end of her lifetime, Persuasion follows Anne Elliot as she is heading toward the end of her marriageable age. She is still carrying the torch for Captain Wentworth from her youth, who she was persuaded not to marry. Anne Elliot, older and wiser, is now able to stand apart from her shallow and oppressive father and older sister.

We discuss themes of the decay of the aristocracy and the rise of new money, the connections to Jane's own life, and the cult of youth.

Please note there are spoilers for the book in this episode. Have a question, recommendation or request? Email us at [email protected]
