The NY Phil Story: Made in New York

The NY Phil comes home to a reimagined David Geffen Hall. This first season back, they pay tribute to the lost neighborhood of San Juan Hill, upon which Lincoln Center was built.

Leonard Bernstein advanced the Phil’s legacy through the televised broadcasts of his Young People’s Concerts. That outreach continues with summer concerts in parks around the city.

In 1893, crowds gathered outside Carnegie Hall to hear a hotly anticipated premiere. More than 100 years later, that piece was still making history as a work performed by the Philharmonic in North Korea.

The New York Philharmonic has helped define how an orchestra can serve its community. In times of grief, the Phil has offered music to console a city, and sometimes a nation, in the face of staggering losses.

For more than 180 years, the New York Philharmonic has been the cornerstone of classical music in New York City. And like its home city, the Phil has always been a magnet for talented hopefuls from around the world.
