The One About Careers episodes

  • Beyond university: let's talk education!

Thanks so much for tuning into this episode in which we talk about various kinds of education and questions to ask prior to enrolling in any specific program.  Besides what subject matter an individual wants to learn more about, a key question needs to be asking why someone wants to enrol in a specific program.  Most of the time, individuals want a job afterwards but they don’t actually investigate if the program being considered will actually get them that job.

We suggest these platforms for research:

Career Cruising School boards and public libraries usually can provide access.

GCF Learn Free Variety of free, engaging lessons.

LinkedIn Learning Many public libraries can provide access

Sarah-Jane talks in more detail about various kinds of education in her book Lost & Found: An Adult’s Guide to Empowering Teens to Make Their Best Career Decision.  Here’s the link to the complimentary chapter from Sarah-Jane’s book

  • A job to fit your personality

Thanks so much for tuning into this episode where we introduce the idea that we are born with strengths of personality and values.  You are likely to have higher job satisfaction when you are using three to five of your top strengths.  Personality temperament can also give us suggestions for the kinds of environment in which we will thrive.

Here’s the Via Character Strengths Assessment that Devon talks about.

Sarah-Jane recommends this Personality Temperament Assessment and talks more about the importance of these career components in her book Lost & Found: An Adult’s Guide to Empowering Teens to Make Their Best Career Decision.  Here’s the link to the complimentary chapter from Sarah-Jane’s book.

The book Devon talks about is Nine Lies About Work: A Freethinking Leader’s Guide to the Real World by Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall

  • Choosing a career based on your interests - part 2

In this episode, we continue our conversation about how interests can help inform your career choices. In this case, though, we're talking less about subjects and more about the three main categories of work: data, people and things (AKA, head, heart and hands).

How do you know what you prefer?
How do the three categories combine in different kinds of work?
Why does this matter as much as subject interests?

    Tune in and find out!

  • Choosing a career based on your interests - Part 1

This is the first of two episodes where we talk about how your interests can help inform your career decisions. Turns out, it's not as straightforward as "I like hockey, so I'm going to be a hockey player."

And it's also not as straightforward as "I don't like math, so anything to do with math is off limits to me."

    That's why this is a two-parter!

In this episode, we talk a little about how interests fit in, and how career assessments like interest inventories can be helpful, if done the right way.

Be sure to tune into this episode, and the next, for the full story.

  • There's more than one way to be intelligent

Smart cookies come in many shapes and sizes! Too often, our teens rule out different careers because they deem themselves "not smart enough."

But how can you be not smart enough when there are different types of intelligence? This week on The One About Careers, we talk about multiple intelligence theory and how your teen's type of intelligence will likely influence the kinds of careers that interest them.

Below are links to more info on multiple intelligences theory, in case you want to nerd out over this just like we do!

  • Values: the real foundation of career choices

It turns out, values are a major player when it comes to making career choices that fit you.

Values can also be pretty tricky to define. They can shift over time, and we often don't know what we value until something forces us to see those values.

    Some areas we hit on:

    • Why values are so critical to career decisions
    • Where will values show up in your work?
    • How do you figure out your values?

    What the heck are aptitudes?
    Are they different from skills?
Do aptitude tests really help with career choices?
Can your aptitudes change over time?

These are just a few of the questions we're talking about this week on The One About Careers.

  • Fitting your skills into career decisions

Where do skills fit into career decisions?

This one seems obvious, but we throw a lot of terms around when we talk about skills: hard skills, soft skills, technical skills, employability skills, transferable skills...the list goes on.

Does education give students all the skills they need to transition into the workplace?
What skills matter most when it comes to professional success?
How can you assess your skill levels?
What are employers looking for when it comes to skills?

  • How MONEY affects our career choices

Haven't we already talked about money? YES.

But money is a major reason WHY we work, it's also a motivator for making individual career decisions. The education programs and fields we choose, the companies we work for, and how much our jobs support other areas of our lives.

  • How does your AGE affect your career choices?

Does your age impact the kinds of career choices you make? ABSOLUTELY!

Join us for Episode 5, where we talk about ages and stages and how they change your perspectives and impact your career choices. Why does this matter to teens? In short, because what feels important now will change over and over again throughout their careers.

Added bonus: it turns out that we both think that work-life balance is total BS.
