[TESSA] On the surface it is a joyous American celebration. Thanksgiving. Yet dangers lurk in this annual gathering of family around the table.
Today we spend some time working through the relationships we have with our older children. When the ties are strained or even broken Thanksgiving can be a dark holiday. In our wonderfully open society, it could be that kids come out at Thanksgiving. Or we learn that they are exploring new sexual and relationship paths that we might not have anticipated. You cannot open a TikTok without seeing new self-expression that might be foreign to our 50+ Open Nesters. And that comes home this time of year.

What do you need to OPEN your NEST? In your LIFE. In your BODY. In your SPIRIT. Do you need MORE…
[Tessa] In this episode of The Open Nesters Podcast, we have an enlightening conversation with Dr. Dawson Church, a leading expert on the intersection of psychology, spirituality, and neuroscience. We delve into the rich themes surrounding the idea of open nesting, a mindset that encourages exploration and growth as we navigate what many refer to as the ’empty nest’ phase of life. Dr. Church introduces the concept of resilience, emphasizing how our later years can be filled with vitality, purpose, joy, and connection.
Dr. Church begins by sharing insights from his extensive background, which includes growing up in diverse cultural settings and immersing himself in spiritual communities. This foundation paved the way for his interest in psychology, particularly his research into PTSD and elevated mental states. He highlights the unique brain structures that facilitate happiness and emotional well-being, explaining how meditation and other evidence-based practices can help individuals tap into their inherent capacity for joy.
We explore the rituals Dr. Church employs in his daily life, including meditation and movement practices, which not only enhance his mental state but also contribute to his overall resilience. He reflects on his personal challenges, including the devastating Tubbs Fire and its aftermath, illustrating the power of meditation and emotional training as tools for navigating adversity. These experiences inform his belief that while we cannot avoid suffering, we can cultivate resilience that enhances our ability to cope effectively.
The discussion shifts towards practical strategies, as Dr. Church outlines the importance of establishing a baseline practice of meditation and a crisis intervention technique, such as acupressure, to regulate mental states. He passionately encourages listeners to embrace meditation as more than a fleeting state of relaxation, but as a way to fundamentally alter the structure and function of their brains for long-term well-being. He emphasizes that even a short daily commitment can lead to significant changes in happiness levels and emotional resilience.
Dr. Church also discusses the relevance of optimism in the aging process, citing research that suggests optimists live longer and achieve greater happiness. He provides a refreshing perspective on aging, drawing from studies of the so-called “blue zones,” locations known for their high populations of centenarians, where the inhabitants thrive in their later years. We examine how consistently choosing gratitude and compassion can enrich our lives as we transition into new stages and roles.
Dr. Church acknowledges that meditation isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, encouraging listeners to explore various styles that resonate with their individual preferences—be it movement, sound, or traditional sitting meditations. He shares heartfelt anecdotes about his own family’s dynamics and the challenges of supporting loved ones through difficult times, highlighting the delicate balance between offering help and allowing others the freedom to find their own paths.
In wrapping up the episode, Dr. Church speaks about the exciting quest for understanding brain functionality related to emotional states and suffering. He invites listeners to embrace the notion that life remains full of possibilities, regardless of age, and emphasizes the transformative potential of mindful practices. Our conversation encapsulates the spirit of open nesting, inspiring the pursuit of a life that not only survives but thrives, filled with love, joy, and a commitment to self-discovery.
Listeners are encouraged to explore Dr. Church’s work further, including his teachings at Omega Institute and other venues, as well as to engage with the resources he provides for cultivating resilience and well-being. This episode serves as a powerful reminder that we hold the keys to our happiness and can choose to fill our lives with joy, connection, and abundance at any stage.

What do you need to OPEN your NEST? In your LIFE. In your BODY. In your SPIRIT. Do you need MORE…
[Tessa] In this episode, we engage with Anne More, a returning guest whose insights on aging and eroticism resonate deeply with our journey as open nesters. We explore the concept of “open nesting”—a vibrant approach to life after children have left home.
This discussion is enriched by Anne’s expertise in boundaries, sensuality, and the celebration of aging. Our focus is not just on surviving this stage of life, but thriving by opening ourselves up to new possibilities in relationships, passions, and self-discovery
We dive into the importance of celebrating our bodies as we age, acknowledging the physical changes that come with time. Anne shares her wisdom on shifting the conversation from self-judgment to acceptance, emphasizing the power of surrender in our journey of self-love. We reflect on how it can be challenging to embrace the changes our bodies undergo, particularly when influenced by societal standards and expectations regarding beauty and youth. Through compassionate dialogue, we explore how close interactions with nature can foster a sense of belonging and acceptance for our evolving selves.
Anne introduces practical exercises to expand our relationship with pleasure, urging listeners to engage in “solo pleasure” practices that prioritize self-exploration over performance. We discuss the transformative potential of mirror work, where we learn to appreciate our bodies as they are, redefining beauty through the lens of age and experience. This practice encourages us to find joy in the present moment, letting go of past comparisons and future anxieties.
As we navigate the complexities of intimacy, Ann emphasizes the significance of communication and the erotic blueprints, which guide couples towards a deeper understanding of each other’s desires. Our conversation explores the dynamics of giving and receiving in relationships, highlighting the potential for empowering shifts, particularly in the context of evolving sexual landscapes as we grow older.
Furthermore, we explore the realm of kink and shibari, recognizing how these practices can cultivate trust and vulnerability within partnerships. Anne eloquently describes the healing aspects of being bound and the exploration of power dynamics, and how these experiences enable deeper connection and intimacy.
Throughout our discussion, gratitude emerges as a central theme, a tool to reframe our perception of aging. We celebrate the wisdom that comes with experience and recognize the beauty of self-acceptance, finding appreciation in the journey rather than focusing on the limitations. Ann encourages us to lean into our vulnerabilities and to allow ourselves to receive support from others as we step into our roles as elders.
Together, we acknowledge that aging is a dynamic process filled with uncertainty and joy. By reimagining our relationships and embracing the fullness of our identities, we can forge deeper connections with ourselves and one another. This episode serves as an invitation to every open nester out there to cultivate resilience, explore intimacy in new forms, and embrace the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

[Tessa] In this episode of The Open Nesters Podcast, we dive deep into the vibrant world of open relationships with returning guests CJ, Linwood and their partner April. Our conversation explores the transformative experiences of modern relationships, particularly as they relate to the concept of “open nesting.” We are reminded that entering this new chapter of life offers not an end, but endless possibilities, exciting adventures, and rich connections.
CJ shares her journey since last appearing on the podcast, highlighting how her relationship with Linwood has evolved over time. The introduction of April as a new partner brings forth a discussion about trust, connection, and the beauty of forming bonds that go beyond traditional norms. We explore how the trio navigates their relationship dynamics, emphasizing the importance of communication and understanding among all parties involved. The conversation invites listeners to rethink their approaches to intimacy and relationships, expanding their definitions beyond societal expectations.
April provides insight into her experience as she integrates into an established partnership. She emphasizes the joy of meeting partners’ family members and the normalization of their unconventional relationship dynamic for their children. The significance of openness in their relationships also extends to how they discuss non-traditional lifestyles with their families. Through shared dinners and family gatherings, they illustrate how love can exist in myriad forms and how acceptance for these different dynamics is essential for modern families.
Our talk also reveals the deeper implications of “aging” and its intersection with sexual vitality. CJ introduces a new concept she’s passionate about—“pleasure span.” This idea intertwines health and pleasure, advocating for the prioritization of well-being and sexual satisfaction as we age. She dives into discussions around menopausal hormone therapy, emphasizing that taking charge of one’s health and pleasure during this stage of life is crucial. Through practical advice, CJ encourages listeners to advocate for themselves in medical settings, breaking the stigmas surrounding women’s health issues.
Moreover, CJ and April share their thoughts on remaining connected through intimacy—both emotional and physical. They discuss how the journey towards pleasure is not bound by age or physical capabilities, encouraging women to explore their desires without fear or shame. This episode highlights the importance of being open to new experiences, whether through relationships, kink, or simply through prioritizing one’s pleasure.
The underlying theme of agency resonates throughout the conversation. As CJ eloquently puts it, understanding one’s own desires and advocating for them can transform the aging process into a period of exciting discovery rather than decline. This proactive approach encourages listeners to embrace their identities, fostering a culture of support among women navigating similar paths.
As the episode wraps up, we reflect on the valuable lessons shared by CJ, Linwood, and April, leaving us with thoughts on how to amplify our own pleasure spans and connections in an ever-evolving landscape of relationships. The journey in open nesting is framed not just as a phase of life, but as an ongoing adventure rich with learning, growth, and unabashed joy. This conversation offers a refreshing perspective that challenges conventional narratives about aging and relationships, affirming that love and connection can flourish in diverse and thrilling ways.

What do you need to OPEN your NEST? In your LIFE. In your BODY. In your SPIRIT. Do you need MORE…
[Tessa] In this episode of The Open Nesters Podcast, I sit down with Cameron Syke, a man whose journey through the complexities of relationships and personal growth perfectly embodies the spirit of the open nesting philosophy. We explore how this stage of life, often viewed through a lens of emptiness, can instead be a doorway to newfound adventures, friendships, and deeper life meanings. Cameron’s story is not only heartfelt; it holds valuable lessons about love, loss, and the courage to redefine oneself.
Cameron opens up about his life experiences, beginning with a poignant account of losing his first wife two decades ago in a tragic accident. This profound loss shaped him and his relationship with his children, who, now in their thirties, have developed into successful adults with families of their own. Cameron shares the delicate balance of navigating relationships with them, especially in light of his recent divorce from his second wife—a process that, despite its challenges, has been marked by mutual respect and a shared understanding.
Diving into the open nesting concept, we discuss the importance of expanding one’s horizons at this stage in life. Cameron reflects on how online dating has allowed him to meet new people and forge friendships outside of his usual circles. We explore the broader implications of open nesting, spotlighting the joy of connecting with others who uplift and inspire us, regardless of traditional relationship definitions. Cameron’s openness to embracing different forms of love and friendship speaks volumes about his growth and adaptability.
A significant focus of our discussion revolves around Cameron’s passion for philanthropy, particularly his work with the nonprofit Voice for Children International. He passionately articulates how the organization impacts thousands of impoverished children in Central America. This work ignites a sense of purpose in his life, reinforcing the notion of giving back while creating meaningful connections with diverse communities. The conversation takes a philosophical turn as we ponder the nature of love, compassion, and the potential for fulfilling relationships that encourage both independence and connection.
As we explore Cameron’s transition from a successful career as a business lawyer to a life devoted to humanitarian efforts, he highlights the importance of nurturing the emotional and creative aspects of oneself. Our chat provides insights into how this pivot has enriched not only his life but also the lives of those he serves. We’re reminded that true happiness often resides in simplification—downsizing material possessions, embracing new experiences, and cultivating a life filled with love and laughter.
Throughout the interview, Cameron emphasizes the power of companionship and community during the open-nesting phase. He calls for a shift in mindset—one that welcomes rather than shuns new relationships, making room for joy and excitement as we traverse this new chapter of life. The discussion concludes with a powerful reminder that our ability to embrace openness and love can lead to a more fulfilling and connected existence, encouraging listeners to seek out adventures and friendships that resonate deeply with them.
With Cameron’s insights and stories serving as guideposts, we’re encouraged to unlock the possibilities that lay ahead when we allow ourselves to be truly open to new experiences and connections.
