This episode of the podcast was recorded live at the 3rd Annual Oregon Brewshed Alliance Brewfest on May 16th, 2018. We had a table at the event where everyone was there to celebrate "Oregon craft brews and the forest watersheds that make them possible!" Hosted by Brewshed® Partner McMenamins Kennedy School, over 30 local Oregon breweries and other businesses poured great brews and donated great raffle prizes for this great cause. We talked to several of the brewery reps, Marielle Cowden, (who heads the Alliance), as well as some volunteers and other partners. Today, Shasta and I talk about RCTC and explain why someone, at any level of running experience, but especially those with specific time or distance goals, might be interested in joining the club. They are taking new members starting this summer. We also talk, and about the inaugural Rose City Mile, which is a one mile race happening on June 30, 2018 at Dunniway track in Southwest Portland. I ran the mile in high school, I wasn’t very good, but I have always been fascinated by the distance. Shasta and I contemplate the significance of this distance, and share a few reasons why this is such a great distance for any and all runners to truly see what they’re made. Even the very casual 5k beer runner will find this an exciting distance.

Greg has been a runner since 1995, and a coach almost as long. Currently, he is the head cross country coach at Mountainside High School in Beaverton, and also the coach of the Rose City Track Club. The bulk of the conversation in this episode between Greg and I is an excerpt from a longer talk I heard him give a while back at Portland Running Company. The idea is that by following these five simple principles, anybody can become faster than they think they can. There are no shortcuts here, and it involves some hard work, but if you’re serious about accomplishing your running-related goals, this is how to do it. John is an icon in the world of craft beer, and while he might not use that word himself, the beer he is known for certainly fits that definition. After spending nearly 30 years working for some of Oregon’s most iconic breweries, in 2012, he took a leap and started a brewery of his own.

In today's episode, we talk with John about the very first beer he ever brewed, (an English Ale), and walk through his brewing journey from McMenamins, to Deschutes, to Full Sail, and now, starting his very own brewery, Ecliptic.
