The Other Half

Happy Halloween Spooktacular and we are starting off with a BANG! Obsession is one of the most profitable movies ever released and hugely popular. But does this little indie flick deserve the attention it gets?

Join us this week as we talk about the dynamic between Bear and Nikki and how the gender roles are flipped. I don't need to write more of a description about this movie huh? I'm sure you've already watched hundreds of YouTube essays about this movie.

Legend of the Guardians was a movie with maybe one of the longest titles of all time. I'm not even going to write it out in this description because it would make it too long; SEO be damned. Planned to watch this movie back when Sam Neil passed away, which now feels like forever ago. Regardless this movie is one of the first movies where Zach Snyder we feel wanted to show he had range. He wanted to say, "I don't just make movies about shirtless men who kick people into holes and super hero movies! I can make movies for kids too."

Well he did. And the movie is honestly not that bad. It's maybe a little convoluted at times, but the message is clear: Being a Nazi is bad. The other message we learned from this movie is that having Owl City make a song for a movie about owls is way, way, way too on the nose.

After finishing up the Maze Runner series, we can't get enough of Wes Ball. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was his latest movie before he gears up to make the Legend of Zelda movie. What weirdly seems like the start of a new trilogy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place after all of the apes have already established colonies on earth.

Caesar from the first three movies is long dead, but his legacy lives on. The movie wrestles with what it means to follow a leader and how iconic leader's messages and morals can become distorted over time.

Wes Ball, he may be cooking over here.

Watch 'Til You Can't, continues with the second Maze Runner movies, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. What lies beyond the maze? Turns out it's Gustavo Fring and Alita Battle Angel! They're here to stop WICKED and help the escaped Gladers find a safe space, well maybe not initially. Alan Tudyk is here in a very weird but fun role. Will the boys continue watching after seeing what's beyond the maze? You'll have to listen to find out!

By popular request, the boys watch The Maze Runner series for Watch 'Til You Can't! Plus honor has been restored to Watch 'Til You Can't. We're no longer doubling up. We're experiencing Thomas, Minho, Newt and Theresa's story week-to-week now.

Thomas wakes up in a mysterious maze and has to discover what the heck is going on here. Why does the maze open up during the day and is crawling with horrible creatures known as griever? Why Gally such a sourpuss? What secrets do the maze hold? Hopefully we'll find out in this adaptation of the popular YA novel.

It's the end of this a'Mazin month with the boys watching The Huntsman Winter's War. A prequel/sequel to Snow White and The Huntsman, but without the snow white part (Kristen Stewart). Mazin apparently had a lot of fun writing a film filled with knock off fairy tale tropes, awful goblin designs and dwarf jokes about their women-folk's appearance. Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain star in this movie where also Charlize Theron is supposed to appear at some point considering how large she looms in the poster.

Will the boys find this magical land charming or a slog to get through?

We're just cravin' more Mazin, with Senseless! This is one of his earliest movies and stars Marlon Wayans and David Spade. Marlon is struggling at college and takes and experimental drug to gain super senses! Unfortunately he takes too much and loses all of his senses! oh no the wacky hijinks!

Look I know we hate doing comedy movies for the podcast, but we had to do it for Craig and honestly, we may be funnier than the movie.

Mike and Ethan continue their journey of this special month of Dog Days of Mazin. This week, the boys split the 2013’s box-office hit Identity Thief, starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy.

Join us as we navigate a movie that kicks off with Sandy getting punched in the throat, kicked in the balls, and car-rammed across the good ol' US of A. This movie tests the "Craig vs. Mazin" scale. Can you even rate his movies on a binary scale? Pull up a chair, hide your credit cards, and let’s find out if this movie is worth a supposedly green-lit sequel.

Hungover from Canada month we try another dubiously themed month (we're addicted!!). The creator of Chernobyl and The Last of Us (the show not the game!), Craig Mazin, has a very interesting filmography and we thought it was the right time to examine it. Welcome to Dog days of Mazin!

We kick off the month with a rough one y'all. The Hangover III. The biggest cash grab on a franchise that has no right to last as long as it did. But Mazin worked on both Hangover III and Hangover II, which are the lowest rated Hangover movies, must I remind you. I remember at least thinking the plot was interesting in the first hangover, but will this one also have a compelling plotline? Because we know the humor is going to age like milk.
