Women's History Month continues (?!) with Sophie's Choice. A (totally) real person who escaped the horror of the holocaust and now has to deal with one toxic man and one dopey man, while simultaneously navigating the English language. Meryl Streep won an Oscar for this portrayal, but how does the rest of this classic movie stand up? We all know the phrase "Sophie's Choice", but is the movie it came from any good?

To finish off our Women's History Month watches, we watch a movie about a figure neither of us knows about: Maria! So that's why we got the famed guest NotTheHoneyBees to explain how incredible this opera diva was. Why is her Wikipedia a mile long, and why did Angelina Jolie have to play her? Honestly, it's a real history lesson right here in this podcast.

Priscilla, wife of Elvis Presley. Still alive to this day. Let's see what her relationship was like to the king of rock. Well it has guns, Graceland, mom issues, control issues, boundary issues, drug issues. Huh, it seems like this relationship may be doomed. This quiet, meditative film on such a big personality speaks volumes of what it would be like to be in a romantic relationship with Elvis.

Women's History Month continues with Spencer and a special guest, Lindsay! Lindsay is an expert on all things related to the royal monarchy and teaches these two knuckleheads (mostly Ethan) a thing or two about what Princess Diana was going through when she lived with the royal family. The royal family is different from British aristocrats, if you didn't know! This is from the same director as Jackie, Pablo Larraín and follows a similar dream-like quality.

Happy Women's History Month! We watched Jackie in honor of it and will be watching other movies with powerful women with one-name titles throughout the month. But this movie stars Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy during the worst moments of her life, the JFK assassination. It shines a light on how absolutely awful it is to lose your husband and how it's even more horrific if he's the president of the United States.
Now that we've seen (basically) all of the Oscar-nominated best picture movies, it's time to talk about our predictions and rank our favorites! It was a weird year. Maybe one of the most controversial Oscars in years.
We also launched a new merch store where you can buy all of Mike's incredible posters for sale! You can find the link here: https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com
We wrap up the Oscar season with A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic! Let's see how Timmy C and our friend James Mangold, who directed some previous podcast movies like Kate and Leopold and Indiana Jonas and the Dial of Destiny, can bring the musical enigma to life. Set when Dylan decided to break out on the scene and go electric, this follows his encounters with various musicians, most notably his relationship with Joan Baez. He also has a side normie relationship with Sylvia, played by Elle Fanning. Luckily for you fine listeners, this is another car cast!

Thanks to movie studios not releasing their movies on VOD, I'm Still Here is our first carcast this Oscar season! I'm Still Here is set in Brazil under the 1970s dictatorship, where a wife must find out what happened to her husband while maintaining a healthy family life. I don't want to reveal more details because hearing us discover what's happening and what the movie is truly about is shocking.

Conclave shines a light on the process of choosing a new Pope. Just like Oscar voting, it's a mysterious and grueling process full of politicking, even in the house of God. We follow Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) as he tries to run the whole process and keep the entire catholic church from going down a path of bigotry and cruelty. Directed by Edward Berger who did All Quiet on the Western Front, the boys watch and find out if the movie is all it's cracked up to be.
It's Oscar season baby!! We recorded this before we knew the nominations, but we can bet this movie will be there. For some reason. This is a weird one. Neither of us knew exactly what it was and we were both shocked when we figured out exactly what this movie was. If you never heard of it, do yourself a favor and listen to our podcast. Somehow, Emilia Pérez finds a way to offend almost everyone to some degree.
This was recorded before the director said "Spanish is the language of underdeveloped countries, the poor and the migrants." and before the awful tweets of lead actress Karla Sofia Gascon's tweets surfaced.

Join Ethan Hawkes and Mike Trujillo as they watch two halves of the same movie and try to piece it all together. Sometimes we learn about filmmaking, but most of the time we learn about ourselves.…
