The Outpost Show episodes

  • 1.35: ‘Two Rashers of Bacon’, with Peter Cohen.
To finish off 2018, it's an episode that was recorded back in August, yet we felt that this was better suited to round off the year based on the topics that we discussed.
Peter is someone you will have heard of if you've been reading The Loop, Macworld, and lately the Backblaze blog.
We go into detail with his history of the Mac since 1985, alongside his freelance journalism career, and also his thoughts on iPad from the point of view of a full-time Mac user.
    But first, Bacon.
Just to say: Thank you for listening and supporting the show this year. It's meant a lot. See you in January.

  • 1.34: ‘Automate’, with Rosemary Orchard.
Rosemary is a blogger, programmer and podcaster, who hosts a podcast with David Sparks, called Automators on RelayFM. I had spotted that she purchased an 11” iPad Pro, and thought it only made sense to invite her on!
Living in Austria and working at the Technische Universität Wien, we had a great chat about her usage on the iPad Pro, and how the charging feature is one of our favourites.
Rose also mentioned a great point about how a Switch and an iPad could work together, and I haven’t stopped pondering about it since we recorded!

  • 1.33: ‘Bigger on the Inside’, a Solocast.
Yesterday I brought out a post about my impressions with the 12.9" iPad Pro (2018), and here, I go into a few more opinions about the iPad.
I start with the two points I raised about some apps not being optimised for the device and keyboard support, followed by a couple of other topics I wanted to address, bluetooth keyboards & zip files.
Something I didn't mention, but I'm on the hunt for stickers. If you have one for a show, let me know and we can trade!
Finally, I give some updates on the schedule of the podcast for the next month, alongside when I was a guest on a certain show last week...

  • 1.32: ‘You’re Pretty Good’, with Zac Cichy.
    This was fun.
It starts with me pronouncing Zac's surname wrong, and it gets better from there!
Zac is a co-host of The Menu Bar, a podcast where he talks with Andrew Clark and the occasional guest about technology and anything else each episode. It's become yet another series that I look forward to seeing on my podcast feed.
We go from my saga with ordering my iPad, and what Zac has ordered, to AirPower and my idea for where it can go, alongside USB-C, Twitter, and finally games, where we talk about a favourite game (and series) of ours.

  • 1.31: ‘Get this Party Started’, with Christopher Phin.
Chris is a writer who started at MacUser in 2002, working his way to the top to MacFormat Magazine, and is currently the Head Editor of The Scottish Wedding Directory.
We go into many topics, from mental health, to writing, freelancing, and Apple itself, alongside his change from being an Editor of a tech-focused magazine, to a wedding one.
I also get into the reasons of why I moved to Manchester, why and how the freelancing happened, and Chris listens to it all.
We do talk about iPads eventually, promise.

  • 1.30: ‘iPad Event Special’.
Yesterday, Apple held a keynote in Brooklyn, where they announced a new MacBook Air, a new Mac Mini, and a new generation of the iPad Pro!
We go through the event topic by topic, amalgamating into us all talking about the iPad Pro.
I'm joined by three guests where we go all in on the event, and where USB-C can fit in an iPad world now.

  • 1.29: ‘iPad Event Thoughts’, a Solocast.
We're on the eve of an Apple Event, where we will most probably see new iPads first and foremost. But I wanted to speak about some other wishes I'd like to see to the line, alongside some thoughts on what else may be announced.
Feel free to send me a tweet to let me know just what you hope to see at the event tomorrow.

  • 1.28: ‘VeeLog’, with Myke Hurley.
*This was recorded an hour before the upcoming iPad Event was announced, so due to some topics spoken of, it's been brought forward!*
A co-founder of RelayFM, the name may ring a bell if you listen to Connected, Pen Addict, Upgrade, Analogue, and many more podcasts that he is a part of.
He decided to go for it in 2014 with his friend Stephen Hackett, and since then RelayFM has flourished into a 'go-to' place of podcasts and their wide assortment of topics.
Here, we speak about how both his iPads fit into his workflow, especially when travelling, alongside what he wants to see in the (now confirmed) upcoming event for a new iPad.
From how the podcasts are edited to even Myke giving me the great news that a favourite game of mine has only just been released onto the Switch, we have a fun hour going through so many topics.
Regarding the title, listen straight to the end and you will discover just how 'hip' and 'with it' I am when I ask about his videos on YouTube.

  • 1.27: ‘The Shortcuts Show’, with Matthew Cassinelli.
Siri Shortcuts had its beginnings as 'Workflow', before being acquired by Apple last year in March. It lets you create workflows by commands and different apps, and you can also activate them from Siri itself. Up until its release, I wasn't convinced. After its release, I was, and I've been wanting to learn more about it ever since.
Which is why this week I'm joined by an ex-Workflow member and now freelancer, Matt Cassinelli, where we talk about how Siri Shortcuts fits on his iPad, our wishes for Version 3.0, alongside him trying to convince me to pre-order an iPhone XR.
He also completely destroys a feature that has been a staple of the show for the last few months!

  • 1.26: ‘Spice World’, with Carrie Marshall.
Nothing breaks the ice better than the Spice Girls.
Carrie has been a freelance writer for the last twenty years, where her first byline was .net in 1998, and since its gone to magazines, sites, and has even written a book. She is also a regular host on a variety of shows on BBC Radio Scotland as the 'tech guru'.
This was recorded at the end of August, and so we talk about my first steps into my now-current freelance career, where Carrie gives her stories about taking her steps into the field twenty years ago, with a lot of great advice given.
We also go into our thoughts about the Apple of 2018, alongside iOS 12 and much more.
But first of all, a quick update on things since this episode was recorded, and a thank you.
