A local baseball coach, Terry Maitland, is initially arrested based on overwhelming forensic evidence and eyewitness accounts, but a conflicting alibi involving a teachers' conference in Cap City where he was seen by multiple witnesses and video footage, introduces doubt and the possibility of a supernatural entity. The investigation then expands to include private investigator Holly Gibney, who uncovers connections to other cases and a shape-shifting creature that can perfectly mimic human appearances. Ultimately, the narrative explores themes of justice, belief, and the confrontation with an unthinkable evil.
