Join our podcast on helping you and your child cope with the trauma of separation and divorce. Thousands of kids experience the stress of separation and divorce every month. How they react depends on their age, personality, and the circumstances of the separation and divorce process.
Every divorce will affect the kids involved — and many times the initial reaction is one of shock, sadness, frustration, anger, or worry. But kids also can come out of it better able to cope with stress, and many become more flexible, tolerant young adults.
The most important things that both parents can do to help kids through this difficult time are:
1: Keep visible conflict, heated discussions, and legal talk away from the kids.
2: Minimize the disruptions to kids' daily routines.
3: Confine negativity and blame to private therapy sessions or conversations with friends outside the home.
4: Keep each parent involved in the kids' lives.
5: Adults going through separation and divorce need support — from friends, professionals, clergy, and family. But don't seek support from your kids, even if they seem to want you to.

Join our podcast on how to build a secure attachment with your child, for parents of newborns and adolescence.
Secure attachment is created by parents who are confident in expressing love, they also allow their child to explore the world around them.
As an adult in an intimate relationship, a securely attached person will be trusting and open, able to give their partner space while being confident that their partner will return to them. They will not be excessively jealous or distant, which are both hallmarks of insecurity.
A securely attached child learns that the world is a safe and friendly place, and that loved ones can be trusted to give you space, but also to provide you with nurturance and closeness. A securely attached baby knows that their parents are involved and caring. There is a healthy balance between comfort, affection, independence, and exploration.
