Melissa opens up about growing up in a strict Haitian household, where acting out could earn you an “extended vacation” to Haiti—one that might begin as an innocent trip to visit family but end with you being left behind. After behavioral issues led to her staying in Haiti, she found herself in a group home with other children facing similar circumstances. Her time there came to an abrupt end after a fight with another resident named Fifi.

That turbulent childhood ultimately helped forge Melissa’s fighting spirit. She takes us through her journey into boxing, building a 3–0 record while fighting in Haiti, earning the nickname “Lil Miss Tyson,” and experiencing the unforgettable moment when the legendary Mike Tyson personally handed her a championship belt after a victory.

It’s a powerful conversation about discipline, survival, resilience, and how a difficult beginning helped shape “Killer Mel” into the fighter she is today.

What if one of Haiti’s greatest treasures is not only its culture, but also its incredible biodiversity—some of which is found nowhere else on Earth?

In this episode of The Path We Take Podcast, we sit down with Anne-Isabelle Bonifassi, a Conservation Biologist and the Executive Director of the Haiti National Trust, an organization created to protect Haiti’s environment and biodiversity for future generations.

We discuss the Haiti National Trust’s mission to identify Haiti’s biodiversity hotspots, acquire land for protected parks, and establish long-term measures to preserve the country’s natural heritage.

Anne-Isabelle Bonifassi also shares why protecting these ecosystems is so important. Haiti is home to many species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, making it essential to preserve the places where they live so they can continue to survive and have a protected home.

Congratulations to Anne-Isabelle Bonifassi on being named a 2026 National Geographic Society Wayfinder Award winner in recognition of the wonderful work she is doing to protect Haiti’s environment and biodiversity.
