Wow - the Government is really pleased with itself that it only took 6 months to get their first Local Water Done Well across the line in Auckland over the weekend. It stops Watercare from increasing water rates by 25.8% to just 7.2% so let’s give credit where it’s due…

Which isn’t this government at all.

A third poll snuck out late on Tuesday night may be be making waves in right wing circles for being more favourable, but it's very definition of the other kind of bad poll - one that's unregulated and has issues with methodology and release.

Yesterday I said opinion polls are really only good for trends - luckily a new poll came out last night that let’s me show you what I mean - and why it’s not likely to improve anytime soon for the coalition government.

Opinion polls are good for seeing trends but not great for detailed outcomes, especially so far out from the election - but last night’s poll on 1News freaked out a lot of people in Facebook comment sections. So to help them, I thought we should look at what the coalition made headlines for over the last couple of days to see if that may give us some clues as to what they’re doing wrong.

Last week Local Government Minister Simeon Brown told councils they need to focus on “Need to haves” not “nice to haves”. Right wing politicians would have you believe that means gutting funding to the creative sector, public amenities, road safety and more - but the Local Government Act 2002 is pretty broad in its definition of what Councils can do.
