When creating and implementing Black History-themed speech therapy plans, clinicians should ensure the accuracy of the information presented.  In this solo episode, Melanie gives tips to finding credible sources for Black History therapy activities.

ASHA (American Speech-Language Hearing Association) requires clinicians to conduct evidence-based practices in every aspect of their intervention. Thus, speech-pathologists, assistants, and graduate clinicians should feel empowered to ensure information presented in speech therapy activities are relevant and relatable. What’s it like being a Black Male SLP? Chances are you probably don’t know since less than 3% of SLPs are Black AND Male (ASHA, 2021).

In this episode, host Melanie Y. Evans, MS CCC-SLP speaks with Kevin Simmons, (aka the Singing SLP) about:

        • His reason behind joining the field
        • His experience navigating his clinical fellowship year
        • Being a minority WITHIN a minority group as Black MALE SLP
        • Changes we can make ASAP to bring more diversity and inclusion to our field
        • Kevin Simmons M.S., CF-SLP is a pediatric speech therapist in Atlanta, Ga. His passions include educating people about diversity, implementing programs tailor development for the underserved population, and hearing individuals’ stories about themselves through song and dance. With a unique twist on educational experiences, Kevin aka The Singing SLP provides songs with his own lyrics that promote development, memory strategies for tests, and so much more. In years to come, he expects the speech therapy game to “change” with initiatives he sets forth. With that said, one of his favorite quotes is from that of the great Angela Y.
