In 1939, "Gone with the Wind" debuted to eight Oscars and a box office gross that remains the highest of all time, adjusted for inflation.

Oscar went with the opulent three hour biopic "The Great Ziegfeld," which chronicles the life of legendary entertainer Florence Ziegfeld. With show-stopping feats of costuming, production design and dancing, the film is pure spectacle. Meanwhile, the biggest hit of the year belongs to Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times." Even in the era of sound, Chaplin marries his traditional silent film persona against themes of industrialization and technology.

Seriously though, "Mutiny on the Bounty" puts our favorite dashing movie star on a ship with Charles Laughton's maniacal, power hungry captain.

"It Happened One Night," the classic Clark Gable/Claudette Colbert rom com swept all five top Oscars. It's Western vs. Silent Classic this week on the People vs. Oscar.

Best Picture winner "Cimarron" bills itself as "terrific as all creation." The western film spans decades of settling of Osage, Oklahoma and is many things, "terrific" being a stretch.

That could describe the biggest hit of the year, "City Lights." Charlie Chaplin's silent masterpiece remains timeless more than 85 years later.

From the traumas of war to the brutalities of growing up in the South, "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Tom Sawyer" both shed light on difficult subjects. In all honesty, the Best Picture winner and top grossing films share little in common, but paint an interesting snapshot of the film landscape transitioning from the 20s to 30s.
