Grade inflation has become a significant issue at Harvard and other elite American universities, where the average GPA has steadily risen over the past few decades, making top grades increasingly common. This trend also is occuring throughout American higher education, where professors and institutions deal with pressures to maintain student satisfaction, secure funding, and enhance post-graduate outcomes. In many U.S. cities, “driving while Black” incidents— when Black drivers are disproportionately stopped or searched by police — have been rising in recent years. Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the start of winter. People believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, so they lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off spirits. When Christianity spread, the holiday blended with All Saints’ Day, eventually becoming the Halloween we know today. But in schools, some people have pushed back against celebrating it—saying the holiday’s spooky or supernatural themes, and its religious or cultural origins, might not be appropriate for everyone. Because of that, many schools now lean toward fall-themed events that everyone can join in on, like harvest festivals or pumpkin days.

Organized retail crime (ORC) is becoming a major issue in the U.S., with a sharp rise in thefts from organized groups. Retailers have lost billions of dollars to these crimes, which is pretty staggering. To fight back, stores have ramped up security with things like locked glass cases and keeping high-value items behind the counter. The criminals behind these thefts often know which states have weaker laws, where stealing under a certain dollar amount doesn’t lead to felony charges or heavy fines. Retailers are calling for stronger laws to tackle the problem, but for now,  the shopping experience is becoming challenging.

Automated “ticket-bot” programs have been a persistent problem in the live-event industry, using scripts and fake accounts to grab large numbers of high-demand tickets the moment they go on sale.  These tickets are then resold at inflated prices, shutting everyday fans out. In September 2025, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), along with a group of state attorneys general, filed a major lawsuit against Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster. The lawsuit claims that rather than stopping these practices, the companies enabled them—letting ticket brokers bypass purchase limits, offering tools like “TradeDesk” to help resell tickets, and profiting from fees at multiple stages of the ticket-buying process. Essentially, the FTC argues that Ticketmaster benefited from a broken system it helped create.

Residents in the Boxton, TN  have been raising serious concerns about pollution linked to the nearby xAI data center for months. Activist and experts also have identified it as a clear case of environmental racism. Many have argued that the facility would not have been placed in a more affluent area, and they’re demanding greater oversight, transparency, and environmental protections.
