Kate Acton joins me this week to help me put into words what I've been wanting to say in response to the Uvalde, TX school massacre, and frankly, she does a better job of it than I could have alone. When I saw her Instagram post, What Mental Illness Is Not, I knew this is how I wanted to broach this topic, and she was gracious enough to accept my invitation to discuss.
In addition to allowing me to nerd out about treatment modalities in mental health practice and discussing her lack of closure from her master's program due to graduating but not being able to walk in May 2020, we discuss how politicians are quick to Jaida Essence Hall it with a "Look over there!" to broad definitions of mental health as the Boogie Man, rather than focusing making changes well within their power to enact some change.
Kate and I implore you to educate yourself on the difference between Mental Health and Mental Illness, as well as the systemic issues in place that allow such acts to continue to happen, so that we are having cogent discussions rather than lazily throwing around terms inaccurately and ignoring the real issues at play.
-Bullying – this is a social-emotional issue
-“Bad Parenting” – this is a social-cultural issue (and largely a matter of opinion)
-Shooting someone – this is a behavior
-Racism/White Supremacy – this is an ideology issue
-Hate – this is an ideology and emotional issue -Media – this is a systems and cultural issue (and also often a matter of opinion)
-Poverty – this is a system and cultural issue
-Being “obviously crazy” or “messed up in the head” – these are insults
--These are all problematic issues that MAY LEAD TO mental health conditions but are not, in themselves, mental illness.
--It is important to be clear as we discuss mental health more openly what we are, and what we are not, talking about.
