Our newest episode is a Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects drafting our favorite MCU Villains. This was an easy transition after discussing Captain America: The Winter Soldier last week. In retrospect, we probably should have cut this at ten a piece but we can’t turn down an opportunity to add more people/movies to a draft. Byers pulls out his great Obadiah Stane impression and Troy tries to confuse the proceedings by explaining his picks out of order.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

 We are diving back into the MCU this week, for the 10 year anniversary of one of our favorite Marvel movies. You'll notice our love for this movie quickly, because this episode has possibly the longest opening we've ever done for a Late Nights at Blockbuster. We still have quibbles even with one of our favorites - although we bring up almost as many quibbles from other movies during this one as we do about the movie we're actually supposed to be talking about. This one was also the gift that kept on giving, as we set a new record for most entries into our "Great Names in Casting" category.

It’s finally here – after being on our most anticipated movies for 2 years in a row – Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel has arrived and we’re here to give you our take on the good, the bad and the ugly (literally) of the new film. No official math exists on this, but this is quite possibly the largest gap in our Phileo Podcast scores for a movie that we were actually willing to do an episode about.

Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects

Our latest Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects explores our disappointing sequels. We decided not to do another draft as we didn’t think it was that deep of a subject. We figured that we would share a few and that would be fine. There are the usual suspects in her but we managed to surprise each other with a few of our picks. We talked about The Last Jedi again. We’re sorry we keep bringing it up but we couldn’t help ourselves.

***We followed through on our promise to research in this episode. Spider-men and their leading ladies are a dating 3 for 3. Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire dated for a little over a year in 2002. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone dated for four years from 2011 to 2015. Tom Holland and Zendaya have been together since 2021.

Goofs: Troy mentioned a Triumph the Insult Comic Dog going to the Phantom Menace premiere but it was actually Attack of the Clones.

Late Nights At Blockbuster

This week’s episode is a Late Nights at Blockbuster celebrating the 25th anniversary of She’s All That. Every random HS movie from the 90s needs a pop star in their first acting role (Usher and Lil Kim!), an oddly jammed in song to sell the soundtrack (Rockafeller Skank by Fatboy Slim), and slang that no one actually used at the time (major wiggage). We also fawn over another random actor from the 90s that didn’t make it in this one. Our actual favorite line from this movie was a little too risqué for our podcast so we didn’t include it, but you can definitely guess it. Byers breaks Troy’s heart by admitting something that he’s held on to for a very long time related to this movie and it’s signature scene. It felt very personal and we’re not here to litigate whether it was completely warranted…

We know – it sure took us long enough – but hopefully you knew you could count on us to bring you an episode about the newest addition to the Star Wars universe – the first season of Ahsoka. Since it’s a show about a galaxy far, far away, we have Calvin joining us as usual. So, grab a gigantic hyperspace ring, or jump in the mouth of a purrgil, and come along for the ride as we give you the good, the bad, and the ugly (because there is definitely some ugly) of Disney’s newest Star Wars series. And if you did not get any of those references - just watch the show and it will all make sense.

If I gave you a dollar you could keep most of the change because all I really want is a…Quarterback. We are celebrating the Super Bowl with a deep dive on the best QB for all 32 NFL teams. We set up some specific ground rules for our exercise so it’s important to keep that in context. We had a lot of discussion regarding where to put the current generation of QBs whose careers are either just starting or have several years of quality play left. We apologize in advance to fans of the Bears, Browns, Buccaneers, and Jets as we weren’t intentionally trying to be mean we just provide the information that is set before us. Cowboys fans…we were intentionally trying to get under your skin. Byers did a better job sticking consistently to his criteria than Troy who was a child tossed back and forth by waves. At a certain point we did the stereotypical “guys throwing out names of random players” bit and had too much fun doing it.

It’s finally time for a Late Nights at Blockbuster episode celebrating the 25th anniversary of Varsity Blues! If you would have told us when we first started this podcast that it would take three years to do this movie, we would have called you crazy. This is probably the movie that we quote the most to each other, the appropriate quotes that is. Speaking of, there is definitely a lot to discuss in the “Who Beefed?” category having watched this at a very different time in our lives than when it came out.
