Phillies ace Zack Wheeler finished second for NL Cy Young for the second time in the four years.
This year, he finished behind Atlanta’s Chris Sale.
We discuss the vote, but also dig into an interesting story by MLB.com’s Mike Petriello, who suggests Wheeler is on a Hall of Fame track anyway. He needs a few more dominant years to put him into serious contention, but there is a strong argument to be made.
We also discuss Friday night’s non-tender deadline. Is Austin Hays non-tendered?
There’s some Juan Soto and Roki Sasaki talk and 40-man roster stuff, too!

Dave Dombrowski said after the NLDS that “sometimes you trade good players for good players.” Ever since, Phillies fans have wondered who Dombrowski might trade to help the Phils win the 2025 World Series?
Ruben, Jim and Todd spend the episode discussing the players who have the most trade value for other teams, including Alec Bohm, Ranger Suárez, Bryson Stott and top prospects like Andrew Painter, Aidan Miller and Justin Crawford.
Are Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, Johan Rojas and others in the conversation, too? Yes, they are.

Jayson Werth is not only a 2008 World Series champion, but he’s a Belmont Stakes champion.
His horse Dornoch won the Belmont this summer. It was such an unbelievable experience that Werth is spreading the word about horse racing, showing people how they can get involved in it, too.
You can follow Werth’s horse-racing teams on Instagram at @twoeightracing and @iconracinglfg
Werth talked to Ruben, Jim and Todd about the Belmont and his love for the sport. But he also talked plenty of baseball, including former teammates Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Chase Utley, what it’s like winning in Philadelphia, resurrecting his baseball career in Philadelphia and more!

John Middleton said Friday at Penn that “we’ll probably not win” the Juan Soto sweepstakes. It’s not a surprise, but it was as candid as anybody had been in talking about the Phillies’ chances to sign the superstar outfielder.
So, the Phillies don’t expect to sign Soto. Do they have any chance at signing Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki? His team announced they will post him for MLB teams, but everybody considers West Coast teams like the Dodgers, Giants and Padres to have a huge advantage over the Phils, who have not signed a Japanese player direct from Japan in their history.
The guys also talk about the Phillies’ front office shake up and more.

Dave Dombrowski keeps saying the Phillies are “open minded” this offseason. He said it last month following the Phillies’ early exit in the NLDS. He said it a few more times this week at the GM Meetings in San Antonio.
“We need to be more open minded about possible moves.”
Ruben, Jim and Todd think Dombrowski is telling everybody that he is going to make a trade. Or two.
The guys talk about Dombrowski’s other comments at the GM Meetings, plus answer your questions, including ones about Alex Bregman, Mike Trout, Devin Williams, Steven Kwan, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Walker Buehler and more.

Do the Phillies have any chance at signing free-agent superstar Juan Soto? Dave Dombrowski said last month that he doesn’t think the Phillies need more star players. John Middleton said last week that it’s “hard to go much crazier with the payroll.”
The Yankees and Mets are the heavy favorites to land Soto because they have the most money to spend.
Ruben, Jim and Todd lay out the reasons why Soto won’t sign with the Phillies. But they also come up with scenarios in which they could surprise people.

Happy Halloween!
Ruben, Jim and Todd enjoyed Tuesday’s interview with Phillies assistant general manager of player development Preston Mattingly, so they couldn’t help but dig into a few more thoughts about the Phillies’ farm system, including how fast Aidan Miller could move through the system. They also expressed their appreciation for Bryce Harper’s postseason success in relation to Aaron Judge’s struggles, considering how few pitches Harper sees in the strike zone in the postseason.
Todd shows everybody a picture of his Halloween costume from 1982. It’s baseball-themed, of course.

The Phillies want to keep their World Series-championship window open as long as possible. For that to happen, they will need contributions from prospects in their farm system. Nobody is better equipped to talk about those prospects than Phillies assistant general manager of player development Preston Mattingly.
Mattingly joined The Phillies Show and discussed the state of the Phillies’ system, the organization’s philosophies on hitting and starting pitching and – of course – top prospects like Andrew Painter, Aidan Miller, Justin Crawford, Mick Abel, Griff McGarry, Eduardo Tait, Staryln Caba and more.

Dave Dombrowski hinted at a potential trade or two for the Phillies this offseason. Sometimes those deals happen fast.
Think Brad Lidge in Nov. 2007 and Billy Wagner in Nov. 2003.
Think Andy Ashby in Nov. 1999 and Jeremy Hellickson in Nov. 2015.
Ruben, Jim and Todd talked about the circumstances surrounding those deals, what it takes to make them and more, including their remembrances of the great Fernando Valenzuela, Andrew Painter’s latest start in the Arizona Fall League and their World Series predictions.

The Phillies are having their organizational meetings this week. It’s where everybody gets together and discusses everything from holes on the roster to free-agent and trade targets to ways to improve the players they already have.
Ruben has run those meetings in the past. He tells us what they’re like. The gang then discusses what they would love to know about those current discussions. They talk a little about the Yankees-Dodgers World Series, too.
