To kick off this new era, host Tyson Martin sits down with Dan Tamarkin, owner of Tamarkin Camera and the Rangefinder Gallery in Chicago, one of the most respected Leica-focused galleries and camera showrooms in the world.

Dan grew up surrounded by cameras. His father, Stan Tamarkin, founded Tamarkin Camera in 1971 in their family home in New Haven, Connecticut. After taking over the family business in 2010, Dan moved it to Chicago and opened Tamarkin Cameras and the Rangefinder Gallery, creating a hub for photographers, collectors, and Leica enthusiasts from around the world.

But Dan’s story extends far beyond cameras.

Trained as a writer and linguistic ethnographer at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Dan has worked as a theatrical lighting designer, teacher, performer, and storyteller, experiences that shaped his lifelong fascination with light, shadow, and visual storytelling.

A passionate photographer and collector, Dan shoots both film and digital, often using a Leica M7 or Leica M Monochrom paired with a 50mm lens. He is also deeply passionate about vintage Leica cameras, particularly classics like the Leica M2 and Leica Standard.

On this episode of The Life of PHYS Podcast, I’m joined by Los Angeles based photographer and filmmaker Caleb Knueven, a visual storyteller whose journey into filmmaking started the same way many creative paths do, with a skateboard and a video camera.

When Caleb was about twelve years old trying to learn how to skateboard, he quickly realized he might not keep up with some of his friends on a board. So instead of competing, he found another way to be part of the culture. He asked his parents for a video camera. The official reason was filming his little brother’s soccer games, but the real goal was making skate videos with his friends.

Those early skate edits eventually sparked a deeper fascination with storytelling and filmmaking. As a teenager Caleb was already storyboarding and creating short films, experimenting with ways to build worlds through moving images. His first short film ran about thirty minutes long and, like most first films, he admits it wasn’t very good. But it was the start of something much bigger.

That creative curiosity led him to the University of Kansas where he studied film and theatre, eventually discovering a passion for visual effects. That passion opened the door to his first professional role at Stargate Studios in Los Angeles where he began working in VFX and gaining on set experience as an On Set VFX Supervisor.

Along the way Caleb also developed a deep love for film photography and the world of analog image making. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a full blown fascination with celluloid, cameras, lenses, and the craft of visual storytelling.

That passion eventually led him to launch his YouTube channel Bad Flashes, where he explores film photography, filmmaking tools, cameras, lenses, and the creative process behind the stories he tells.

In this conversation we talk about the influence of skate culture on creativity, the transition from skate videos to working in the film industry, the pull of analog photography in a digital world, and how tools like cameras and lenses shape the stories we tell.

Caleb Knueven’s journey is a reminder that sometimes the path into filmmaking begins in the most unexpected places.

On this episode of The Life of PHYS Podcast, I’m joined by Jillian Brown, a Canadian documentary photographer whose story is one of resilience, adventure, and the deep healing power of the natural world.

Jillian is someone who truly lives the stories she shares. Her work takes her into wild places, often pushing herself to the edge physically and mentally, all in pursuit of documenting the connection between humans, nature, and the power that exists when we slow down enough to listen to the world around us.

Her journey with photography started early on a small island in Northwestern Ontario where she grew up surrounded by wildlife and the natural world. After receiving her first camera as a young girl, she began documenting that relationship with the land and the animals around her. That connection would go on to shape the direction of her life.

After studying Fine Arts and Photography in university, Jillian eventually made her way west to British Columbia chasing both adventure and the creative life. But like many powerful stories, the path wasn’t easy. After leaving an abusive relationship she found herself homeless, living in a tent in the woods while navigating a diagnosis of PTSD.

And it was there, back in nature, that something began to change.

The same wilderness that inspired her photography as a kid became a place of healing. A place to rebuild. A place where she began to understand just how powerful our connection to nature can be when everything else in life feels uncertain.

That shift led Jillian to push herself in incredible ways. She became the first Canadian woman to paddle across America and completed a world first expedition paddling a tandem sea kayak down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Along the way she documented landscapes, wildlife, cultures, and the deeper stories that live inside these places.

Her work and her story have reached people around the world through publications, speaking engagements, outdoor organizations, and even the Bell Let’s Talk national mental health campaign where she shared how nature helped her navigate PTSD and find her way forward.

Today Jillian continues to use photography, storytelling, and time spent in the wild to inspire others to reconnect with nature, with themselves, and with the idea that healing can sometimes begin with something as simple as stepping outside.

This is a conversation about resilience, about adventure, about creativity, and about the powerful relationship between the natural world and our own mental health.

Originally from Santa Cruz, Scott studied photography in college and later graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in English. After college he spent several years in Portland, Oregon, working in the restaurant industry while continuing to photograph and refine his creative voice.

Scott’s work is heavily influenced by cinema and classic photographic masters including Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, and Richard Avedon. His approach to photography embraces storytelling, atmosphere, and the idea that photography, like films allows the artist to create a world where imagination and reality blend together.

A dedicated Leica rangefinder shooter, Scott prefers the simplicity and intentional process that the Leica M system offers. For him, the camera should disappear in your hands so the photographer can remain present, connected, and fully engaged with the moment.

With over 16 years working with National Geographic, Ben has documented stories across Mongolia, Nepal, Thailand, China, the Canadian Arctic, Haiti, and coastlines throughout the Pacific and Central America. His work sits at the intersection of adventure photography, conservation, and high-level commercial production, making him one of the most versatile storytellers working today.

But what truly sets Ben apart is impact.

Early in his career, Ben led a powerful photojournalism investigation on Cocos Island, exposing illegal shark poaching operations and tracing the trade across international markets. That work was presented to the President of Costa Rica and directly contributed to the expansion of two national parks and the protection of critical marine ecosystems.

From there, his journey has taken him into some of the most extreme environments on earth, including a 60-day dogsled expedition across Ellesmere Island with polar explorer Will Steger, documenting climate change in the Arctic.

Ben’s work spans multiple worlds.

From photographing the search for Genghis Khan’s tomb in Mongolia, to hosting National Geographic’s Extreme China, to producing large-scale commercial campaigns like the 2025 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue featuring Olympic and professional athletes. Ben's ability to move between documentary, adventure, and commercial storytelling is unmatched.

Now based between Park City, Utah and Baja California Sur, Ben continues to explore and document the world through both client work and personal projects, including his fine art book Baja Bound and his latest exhibition, The Art of the Unseen.

On this episode of The Life of Phys Podcast, Tyson Martin sits down with Portland, Oregon–based photographer Ryan Aanderud, a street photographer whose work reminds us that photography is about far more than just making images. It is about connection, trust, and service to the communities around us.

Tyson was introduced to Ryan through his childhood friend Ben Tobin, known for his work supporting communities in and around Spokane, Washington. Ben has a way of bringing good people together, and Ryan is absolutely one of those people.

Ryan has carried a camera with him since he was young, but over time photography evolved into something deeper. Today his work blends street photography with community care. When Ryan walks the streets with his Leica Q2 Monochrom, he is not just carrying a camera. In his bag you will often find food, clothing, medical kits, Narcan, and printed photographs that he returns to the people who trusted him enough to collaborate in a portrait.

Shooting exclusively with a 28mm lens, Ryan works extremely close to his subjects. That physical closeness requires honesty, respect, and genuine human connection. The result is powerful black and white photography that highlights the dignity and humanity of people often overlooked.
