  • Emotions Don’t Have Brains

“Emotions don’t have brains.” I heard Patsy Clairmont utter these words and I was stopped in my tracks.

I was listening to Patsy being interviewed by Andy Andrews and David Loy on the In the Loop podcast. I love it when someone can say something so profound with just a few words.

I can relate most of the communication mistakes I have made over the years to reacting too quickly from emotion.

Emotions are not a bad thing. They are very much an important part of us being human. Emotions are part of who we are.

The problem arises when our emotions control us.

“Emotions don’t have brains. God has given us a will that is stronger that our emotions.” ~ Patsy Clairmont

Have you ever made a phone call or sent an email in frustration or anger and immediately regretted it? Or, confronted someone before you had all of the facts? I have more times than I would like to admit.

These types of knee-jerk reactions can be detrimental to your long-term relationships in your personal and business life.

Here’s a few ways you can avoid letting your emotions control you:

    1. Know yourself. The better we understand our own personality and how we react in certain situations, the quicker we can gain control.
    2. Slow down and take a rational approach. In most cases, I will call someone I trust, replay the scenario and get their advice. This new perspective is vital for me to think clearly and consider my options. Also, it helps to pray about it and take a long walk.
    3. Look for a positive solution. Our emotions can lead us to imagine the worst outcome in a situation. Worry will only ruin your day and we shouldn’t worry about things we cannot control.
    4. Make a conscious choice. Be intentional about how you choose to handle the situation instead of being driven by your feelings. Take the time needed to think it through.

Patsy was agoraphobic and now she speaks to thousands of women in large auditoriums across the country with Women of Faith. She is a testament to the fact that we can express our emotions and use them to make our life richer, but we do not have to be controlled by them.

    Have a great week!

  • The Wheel of Life: Is Life Balance Possible?

Many people state that Life Balance is a myth and you may be surprised, but I agree.

To expect everything to work out smoothly and evenly 100% of the time is unrealistic. Life and the unexpected is always going to happen but that does not give us a free ticket to throw up our hands and say, “There’s nothing I can do?”

Many of my coaching clients are out of balance and feel out of control because they failed to make deposits in all areas of their life. Perfect balance may be difficult but setting goals in seven areas of your life can help you reach a higher level of productivity and effectiveness.

Zig Ziglar called it The Wheel of Life. Dan Miller referred to it as the Seven Areas for Achievement in his best selling book 48 Days to the Work You Love.
Both of these gentlemen teach that setting goals in the following areas will lead to a better life by showing us how we need to distribute our time and focus.

    1. Spiritual
    2. Family
    3. Financial
    4. Physical
    5. Social
    6. Personal Development or Intellectual
    7. Career

Each one of these areas are connected and can lead to higher levels of success. However, if neglected, they can cause a person to spiral downward.

The best way to predict your future is to create it. ~ Stephen Covey

November is approaching quickly. Have you started creating a plan for 2015? If not, get started today.

Lesa and I enjoyed a special lunch and spent some quality time discussing what we would like 2015 to look like personally and professionally.

If you would like some help, download this Goal Setting Worksheet by Dan Miller by clicking here. It is the one I use for myself and clients and will guide you through the process.

Have a great week and better 2015!

  • 200th Episode! A Servant's Heart Revisited

I wrote and published my thirteenth blog entitled A Servant’s Heart back in April of 2012. This is a memorable blog for two reasons.

One: The topic spoke to the heart of how every person can experience true success in selling, business and life.

Two: After twelve blogs and wondering if anyone was reading or receiving any benefit from my writing, I received an email from Suzan Hicks. She told me how much the message meant to her and she forwarded it to her entire digital rolodex of coaches and contacts.

This gave me the encouragement and fuel to keep writing. Suzan, thank you! (Suzan and her husband are now serving as missionaries in Haiti.)

Here is that blog just as it was published in 2012.

Please tell me, what would the world be like if everyone had a servant’s heart?

When I hear the word “serve” the next word I think of is “humility”. I make a statement when I am providing sales training, “It is not about you…it is never about you”! This can be applied to many areas of our lives and can be practiced everyday. Have you ever witnessed the surprise on someone’s face when you hold the door for them in a public place? Or, have you experienced reaching that same door when a stranger slams through without giving you a second thought?

A person that serves with proper motives will set aside his own needs and will focus on those of another. How does this pertain to business? One way would be to make sure you give your customer what they need based on a clear understanding of their situation.  Also, don’t forget who allows you to stay in business and provide for your family. These are just a couple.

The success you have in your life will be a direct correlation of how many people you serve. An attitude of serving is not something you put in your schedule to do when it is convenient. I believe it becomes a part of who you are. What is most interesting about the person who humbles himself and serves…he usually gets the blessing.

Matthew 20:28: Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Please share your thoughts and stories on having or knowing someone with a “A Servant’s Heart”.

    Have a blessed week!
