If you are like me, your day has a variety of tasks from appointments, phone calls, note taking, new and completed to-do’s and more. Many times I complete some of these tasks between my favorite podcasts while I am driving in my car. Driving safely is important but I have found some ways to make this time productive and safe.
A few months ago, I purchased the LG Tone Pro. You may have seen these odd looking headsets around people’s neck and wondered what they were.
I was struggling with the hands free Bluetooth products I was using. It seemed that the other person had trouble hearing me and I had to crank it up too loud to hear them. I gave this product a fifteen-day trial and never looked back.
In conjunction with my iPhone and Siri I can control all aspects of my phone from making calls, listening to text and voice messages, stop and start my podcasts and much more without taking my eyes off the road and hands off of the wheel.
Do you have tasks fall through the cracks? I know I have and there is nothing more embarrassing than realizing you forgot to return a call or do something for a customer several days after it was expected.
Most phones have a voice recorder and I will record the details in to my phone to complete later. Also, I have embraced an app called Wunderlist. It is a simple, easy to use app that allows you to simply type in your tasks and check them off when they are complete. You can schedule Due Dates, Reminders and add notes quick and easy.
Do you have notes on pieces of paper all over your desk and in your car? Are you constantly searching for that phone number or details from that appointment?
I have had Evernote for a while but I am finally discovering the functionality and I have been missing the boat. If you have the ability to scan a document or upload a picture or even take a picture of a document you can load it into an Evernote notebook and it will immediately become searchable. You will have everything in one place and easy to find.
Depending on the type of work you do, you may find that Noteshelf is a very useful tool. I use it all the time on my iPad and love it.
Regardless if you are a sales executive or a soccer mom, being organized AND safe is important. Hope these tools help.
Question: What are some tools you use to stay and organized? Share in the comments below.

Are you being genuine with how you communicate with other people?
For this analogy I will simply place fakes into two different categories.
Fake number one is the person who is learning and adopting new skills that have not yet become natural. This is forgivable since we have to begin somewhere. Learning how to connect with someone properly and with the correct energy is vital to sales, business and new opportunities In order to improve, we have to practice.
This falls between Conscious Incompetence and Conscious Competence in the learning stages. They are consciously aware of what they are trying to do and practice but the skills have not become second nature.
You may have heard the phrase, “Fake it until you make it.”
For example, Dale Carnegie advises:
If we want to be enthusiastic, act enthusiastic.
Fake number two is the person who is entirely in it for their own gain. Their motive is to win and the people who can’t help them don’t matter and are a waste of time. Many times these people know what to do and the correct words to say but it comes off as insincere and calculating.
Words that describe this person are disingenuous, crafty, fake, deceitful and dishonest.
This type of communication will lead to broken trust and destroy professional and personal relationships.
In order to avoid making this impression, it is important to understand that we must treat people the way we want to be treated and have their best interest in mind.
Genuine communication and long term relationships are built from good character and virtue.
Virtue is defined as behavior showing high moral standards.
Developing great people skills takes practice and may feel uncomfortable in the beginning but will become natural over time. It may even feel like your faking it at first but if your motive is pure, they will never know or care.

I recall an advertisement for a popular learning course that began, “People judge you by the words you use.” That is a true statement. However, whether you like it or not, they judge you in other ways too. Everything you do sends a message.
Dale Carnegie was born on a farm in Maryville, MO in 1888. He went on to write several books including one of my favorites, How To Win Friends and Influence People. Carnegie stated the following on how we are perceived.
“There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it.” ~ Dale Carnegie
His observation in the early twentieth century focused on how we are perceived personally. In today’s world, the same rules apply. We can additionally send a powerful message in social media, our website, what we write and pictures and videos we share online.
Let’s take a look at each of these four contacts individually and a few ways you can put them into action.
Understanding clearly the message we want to send and getting busy conveying that message will increase your success in all areas of your life.

Increasing self awareness by knowing your strengths and weaknesses can increase success in several areas of your life including your personal and business communication.
Most of us become aware of our strengths as we gain life and work experience but many times the weaknesses elude us. These are called blind spots.
Claudia Shelton’s definition; “Blind Spots are those personal habits that we can’t see about ourselves that everybody else can see.”
I sat in on a final interview with a client after the perspective employee had just completed the DiSC Personality Assessment. I asked him if he felt the assessment was accurate. He replied, “Absolutely. Very accurate. I also read some things about myself that I generally dislike in other people. I came to realize that these characteristics are accurate also. I never knew”.
I also found out that he had taken personality assessments in the past but the employer did not share the results with him. How could this be? One of the greatest benefits of taking the assessment is to understand how we react to our environment and learn from it.
“Your security is determined by your ability to define what it is you do that has value. The clearer you can be on what it is you do well and what provides value for someone else, the more security you have.” ~ Dan Miller, 48 Days to the Work You Love
Here are some benefits of self-awareness:
Every human has four endowments – self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom… The power to choose, to respond, to change. ~ Stephen Covey
The happiest and most successful people I know have a keen understanding of themselves, the good and the bad. It gives you the freedom to be your genuine self.

If we are not careful, our work and personal life can become hectic and overwhelm us. Are you taking moments to slow down, quiet your mind and savor each moment?
I spent a few days last week with a friend and client in northern Michigan at his family’s two thousand acre private lake. We fished, golfed and ate some great food. I noticed how my friend seemed to enjoy every moment.
One evening as we were finishing dinner, we were served a delicious dessert. It was a recipe that had been in the family for generations. He put down his fork and instructed me to take one bite very slowly and taste it. Shut my eyes and savor the flavor. It became an experience.
I asked him privately about how he lives each moment so deeply. He described to me the people he knew who had everything life could offer but were miserable and did not appreciate it. He vowed not to be that person.
Saturday Lesa and I took a rare trip to the movie theatre to see The Hundred-Foot Journey. A film following the travel of the Kadam family from India to France where they open a restaurant directly across the road from Madame Mallory’s Michelin-starred high-end eatery.
At the center of the movie is Hassan, a young man who aspires to be a chef. As a young boy he was taught to cook by his mother and learned to taste and appreciate the flavor. Much like my friend, the movie showed Hassan savoring the food and the experience. I highly recommend the movie.
We all have work that needs to be done and I enjoy the satisfaction of completing a task and doing it well. However, we need to take moments to quiet our mind and slow down.
I have found these moments at the beach or sitting by a lake, a therapeutic massage or yoga class. You can find a quiet place and read the Bible or a book. Take time to be thankful and pray.
Whatever you decide to do, make it a priority for your own health and well-being. Start savoring life today.

Has good manners gone out of style? Do you find yourself surprised when you see someone using proper etiquette and good manners?
Even though I would prefer our society to return to a time when our children were taught to be polite and treat others with respect, it does create a great opportunity for those of us who believe and embrace this practice.
If you are in sales, own your own business or you are looking for a new career opportunity, good manners will set you apart from the crowd. It is not the only component required in making a good impression but it is essential and bad manners will close the door on many opportunities.
Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot ~ Clarence Thomas
Here are five reasons I believe manners are important:
“Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use.”
~Emily Post
