After a busy month of traveling, we're doing a lot this episode! First, we're reviewing Dreamcon and SDCC! We're talking about all of the comic news that came out of the cons (Vixen, Static, Steel, Megascope, etc.), the network of BIPoC creators that ride for each other, our panels, and all of the cosplays!! While we LOVE both conventions, they have quite a few pros and cons that folks should take into consideration when making their plans for next year!! And, we have a massive haul that barely made it home because we forgot to ship these books home. 😅

This week, Kwento Comics is in the lair!!!! We met them at 2025 SDCC and loved their vibe! They are a family-focused comic imprint run by a mom and daughter duo (Cecilia and Waverely Lim) who create stories about Filipino and Asian mythology, culture, and history!

We LOVED the way sisters Kay and Dom from The Moon Odyssey speak life into each other and their work!!  The intention behind their actions and community deeply resonated with us, and when we tell you we cried after this interview, it was cathartic. The Moon Odyssey is a comedy-adventure animated webseries about an estranged family of space pilots searching for their missing family member. It's Hilda meets Bob’s Burgers!! 

We discuss their journey from indie writers to an animation studio, grief in real life and as a theme in The Moon Odyssey, how they have gone outside of their comfort zones to create a story and community that helps one another and manifests all things meant for them. We also discuss the show opening and what's next for the show!

We have a new segment: The Book Was Better! This week, we’re talking Supergirl- both the DC movie recently released and the Tom King graphic novel!!! We really wanted to like the movie, but we had so many issues with the narrative choices. It gave white woman feminism. And when you compare it to the graphic novel, even more issues appear 😭 The great news is that Milly embodied her Supergirl and the cast did a phenomenal job!! Bri gives great insight into how fatigue might be an issue only for casual fans of the genre, whereas Keisha sees it as an issue with the superhero's role in today's society. What we do agree with is the hope that superheroes bring and their necessity in pop culture.

This week, we're discussing the 2026 Drawn and Quarterly, Eisner-nominated, and LAMBDA award-winning graphic novel Cannon by Lee Lai. This was a comic we remember seeing Cannon at San Diego Comic Con in 2025, and we deeply regret not reading it then. This slice of life comic about a queer, overworked, and underrecognized woman is so relatable and brilliantly told!

Cannon by Lee Lai (2025)-  We arrive to wreckage—a restaurant smashed to rubble, with tables and chairs upended riotously. Under the swampy nighttime cover of a Montreal heat-wave, this is where we meet our protagonist, Cannon, dripping in little beads of regret sweat. She was supposed to be closing the restaurant for the night, but instead, well, she destroyed it. The mess feels a bit like a horror-scape—not unlike the horror films Cannon and her best friend, Trish, watch together. Cooking dinner and digging into deep cuts of Australian horror films on their scheduled weekly hangs has become the glue in their rote relationship. In high school, they were each other’s lifeline—two queer second-generation Chinese nerds trapped in the suburbs. Now, on the uncool side of their twenties, the essentialness of one another feels harder to pin down.

Yet, when our stoic and unbendingly well-behaved Cannon finds herself—very uncharacteristically—surrounded by smashed plates, it is Trish who shows up to pull her the hell outta there.

In Cannon, the full palette of a nervous breakdown is just a slice of what Lai (Stone Fruit) has on offer. As Cannon’s shoulders bend under the weight of an aging Gung-gung and an avoidant mother, Lai’s sharp sense of humor and sensitive eye produce a story that will hit readers with a smash.

We found this one on the clock app and were mesmerized by the comic, if you can't tell how we gushed about it! We talk about the intentionality behind the story, putting together an Avengers-level team across countries, and the importance of making such a comic as accessible as possible (ya'll, they are punk AF!!)

Summary of Dead of Night:
Twenty-four hours until Liberty Night Commences.

Long gone are the days of pronoun police and participation awards. In New Texas, there’s only one celebration that matters: Liberty Night, an annual evening of government-backed carnage and lawlessness – an homage to a new dawn that’s “free for all”…

But ten year old Rae-Ann Richardson pays that no mind. She’s hours away from turning eleven and her gift this year? A secret pact between her and southern belle, Bailee Martin, the bestest friend south of the old American border. So what if Rae’s ma has to sell off her favorite presents every year to help them get by? The only gift lil’ Rae truly needs comes in the form of a pigtailed girl who’s as sweet as she is generous – including with her punches…

Four hours until Liberty Night Commences.

In present day New Texas, Rae's now seventeen going on eighteen and can only say one thing for certain: she hates Bailee Martin. So what if an ungodly amount of her day is spent actively avoiding thoughts of the dang smile that used to light up this shitty town? But none of that matters right now, because Rae’s just won her semi-final soccer game and with an American scout in town to witness the win, it might just be her ticket to freedom from both New Texas and the Martin family… but both of their worlds are about to be turned upside down with a crash.

Paths’ collide, and an alliance is proposed: if Rae and Bailee can help the cousins score an insane amount of cash, neither of them will need scholarships or revolvers to avoid ever seeing another Liberty Night again. At the end of the day, the crew all want the same thing: freedom – whether from New Texas, from their fears, or freedom to live authentically. Murderous clowns, vengeful Devils, and controlling fathers be damned, they’ll get what they want, and they might just derail a sinister school initiative while they’re at it. A rag tag group of townies teaming up for a high stakes heist should be a no brainer. They’ll just have to put the past aside and work together – make it to safety, or die trying. And it’s going to take some serious guts… literally. It’s Rae-Ann Richardson’s birthday and her gift this year? A night of complete and utter chaos – and maybe, just maybe, a second chance.
