In Red Dead Redemption II, the mysterious Strange Man, an easy-to-miss side character, sends John Marsden on a series of quests in which he must determine which way his honor lies, while commenting on the choices he had already made.

The tale weaves in elements found in classic tragedies—betrayal, murder, and, of course, hubris—spinning them for a post-apocalyptic world. And even at its most grandiose, at the story's core is the deep and familiar sorrow of a parent's failure and a child's pain.
