  • Prince & Friends: SEX GOD COME YES (Purple Reign VI)
I have been channeling my confusion and grief over the passing of the Purple One by diving deep in to my Prince archives and mixing up favorite, lesser-known tracks from Prince and his Purple Posse. No greatest hits here; this is a selection for Prince connoisseurs of live tracks, B-sides, stuff he produced for friends and special edition covers!

  • Spring Buds III : Fiddleheads Unfurling (Beardy Manfolk Equinox)
Welcome back to the Podcast Cafe on the verge of springtime! Make yerself comfortable as DJ Fundi serves up a blend of mostly-new beardy manfolk from many of our musical heroes: M. Ward, Andrew Bird, Damien Jurado, Iron & Wine, the Cave Singers, Sturgill Simpson, Bon Iver... and a surprise appearance by Ms. Lucinda Williams in the midst of it all. These modern folk songs are often haunting, sentimental, sometimes spooky, always satisfying. Don't know why so many bearded-men-folk-singers released new albums all at the same time, but they did, and DJ Fundi is here to help you sift through to find the best and most nutritious nuggets. If you like what you hear tonight in our Spring Buds III gathering, support the artists and buy their records, as well as consider making a donation to the Podcast Cafe to help us keep the lights on and the music flowing.

  • Black Radio
Welcome to Episode #103! As in previous episodes El Blanco Chango and SnowGreen SpinCycle, DJ Fundi typed a word in to iTunes -- in this case, obviously, "black" -- and challenged himself to make a fun, interesting & coherent mixx from the search results. This was a pretty easy color challenge as you might imagine, and it offered a wide array of funky, soulful, jazzadelic and reggae-skankin' tunes.
track list :: Blackalicious "Blazing Arrow" > The Black Brothers "The Donkey Bray" > Black Heat "Wanoah" > The Black Keys "Black Mud" > Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics "Addis Black Widow" > "Voices of Black" > Miles Davis "Black Satin" > Robert Glasper "Black Radio" (with Mos Def) > Ray Charles "Blackjack" > Prince "Black Sweat" > Parliament "Theme from the Black Hole" > D'Angelo "Prayer" from "Black Messiah" > Aretha Franklin "Border Song "Holy Moses" (from 'Young, Gifted & Black') > Stevie Wonder "Black Man" > James Brown "I Feel Good" (Tall Black Guy remix) > The Heptones "Choice of Black and White" > Lee "Scratch" Perry "Pablo in the Black Arc" > Pearl Jam "Black" > Led Zepplin "Black Mountain Side" > Cave Singers "Black Leaf" > Local Natives "Black Spot" >  The Beatles "Blackbird" >  Tony Rice Unit "Blackberry Blossom" > Laura Veirs "Black Butterfly > Blackened Anchor" ::

  • Starman Songs: Tribute to David Bowie
With this jointly-created mix by Playaduster and Fundi we attempt to honor the life, music and creative legacy of David Bowie after his sudden departure from Planet Earth. They collaborated on this mix that features Bowie's songs (in somewhat chronological order), interviews, news reels, a few choice covers and a handful of remixes. When choosing tracks, we had studio cuts, live versions, remixes and sometimes Bowie's reinterpretations of them re-recorded 20+ years later ~ they often blend several sources in to one track, so listen carefully! So much gratitude for this magical human being and all that he left behind.

  • Rain Return
It's been a very interesting week here in the Pacific Northwest, home of the Podcast Cafe : raging wildfires, air full of smoke and ash, then a giant storm on the day of the Full Moon bringing torrential rains and winds strong enough to topple trees and knock out power at the cafe. In the midst of all this elemental power and dramatic planetary upheaval, we lit some candles, opened the cafe to our neighbors and spun out this mix of newish music that has been tickling our earholes here in late Summer. "Rain Return" features a bunch of cafe regulars like Wilco, Beck, Built to Spill, Father John, Beirut, Kurt Vile and Laura Marling, while also bringing is some new friends that we'd love for you to meet, like Courtney Barnett, Yaima, SaQi, Hot Chip and Pepper Proud. DJ Fundi gets things started off, while DJ Playaduster steps in midway through to blend in some new, groovy sounds from the world of electronica and sacred bass music.
    Hope y'all enjoy!
