How exciting to already be on our second book.  I can’t believe that we read The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in only 10, 15-minute readings.

Today we begin reading “The Time Machine” by HG Wells, published in 1895.

There have been many adaptations and films based around this book, so I feel safe in saying that this piece of literature has shaped the modern fascination with the possibility of time-travel.

It is now time for Dr Henry Jekyll to make his final summation of the case.  We begin this last day at the point where Jekyll is convinced that Hyde must be gotten ridden of for good. Maybe, he wasn’t so convinced, because he still rented Hydes apartment in Soho, and kept Hyde’s clothes, ready to wear.  That doesn’t really sound like a man who has totally freed himself from all carnal pleasures.

Nevertheless, we are at the point where Jekyll resumes control, after Hyde has joyfully committed the murder of Sir Danvers Carew. He is resolute that the murderer must never see the light of day again… or is he?

Can you believe it?  This is the second last day of the book.  We will be finishing tomorrow!  Luckily, though, the best is to come in today and tomorrows reading. 

We are now deep into the mindset of Henry Jekyll, as he rationalises the unleashing of his evil and baser instincts onto the world.  He does not feel responsible for the actions of Hyde.  Jekyll sees Hyde as something different from himself.

When in the Hyde body, he finds a freedom that he has never felt before.  Freedom from the battle of dualities that rage between all of us.  The duality of doing good for others and seeking pleasure for ourselves.  Today, he is going to give us the second part of his statement.

Now we have come to the first hand account of the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, from the very hand of Henry Jekyll himself. 

We learned of Mr Hyde through the account of Mr Enfield (Uttersons walking friend), Mr Uttersons own investigations, the murder of Danvers Carew, Pooles experience and the fears of the household of Dr Jekyll.  Lanyon also provides his evidence as to the disasterous nature of this case.  All that remains, is for us to let the man himself, Dr Jekyll, tell us the truth of the situation.

I love how this book goes from the events, to the witnesses, and now to the person himself.  Is he a victim, or a perpetrator, we are yet to discover.

One may be excused for thinking that the story is now over.  After all, Mr Hyde is dead.  However, it is often the case that the unveiling of the truth only happens after there has been a death.  The rest of this book is going to be spent getting to the root of the matter.  Prior to now we have only had mystery, now we are to have factual understanding, motive, and mental anguish…. That is going to bind this whole case together.

Today we will be reading “Dr Lanyons Narrative” , which I imagine to be like a witness account, and then tomorrow, we will begin on “Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement Of The Case”.

Let’s just remember when we are reading “Dr Lanyons Narrative” that the voice of the storyteller has now shifted from Mr Utterson to Dr Lanyon.  We are now speaking in his words…

I hope you are excited that we might finally find out what is going on at Henry Jekyll’s house.  Who is this strange person living in the good Doctors cabinet?    Are we going to come face to face with the reality of the situation?  We’ve already probably got some suspicions about what is going on, and we are trying to work out where Mr Hyde fits into all of this.

Today, we are going to read the last half of the chapter “The Last Night”. Poole, Jekylls butler has begged Mr Utterson to come to Dr Jekylls house as the staff are terrified of this ‘thing’ living in the back of the premises.  Poole has just told Mr Utterson that he has seen the creature scrounging about, and wearing a mask, and Dr Jekyll would have no reason to wear a mask.  Mr Utterson tries to calm them all down.

We are now caught up in the throws of this mystery. Why did Dr Lanyon pass away so quickly?  What are all these conditional envelopes about?  Why has Henry Jekyll cloistered himself away again?  It’s time for us to get some answers.

This is Day 4 of our reading “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. 

If you haven’t been listening from the beginning of the book, I suggest that you, as it clearly sets the stage for discovering who is the fiend of Hyde, the poor soul of Jekyll, and the curious Mr Utterson. 

It’s more than just the stomping of a young local girl.  Things have really escalated.  We are now talking about the murder of a well-respected man about town.  Utterson leads the police to Hyde, but they don’t get there in time and it appears that Mr Hyde has fled.

We are reading “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.”  In the last couple of days, Mr Utterson has become totally engrossed by the character of Mr Hyde and by the plight of his friend Dr Henry Jekyll, that has led him into a relationship with this fiendish type.

I am going to be reading two short chapters day….  The first is "Dr Jekyll was quite at Ease" and the second is “The Carew Murder Case”. So, let’s get reading…

Yesterday, we were introduced to Mr Utterson and his friend Mr Enfield, as they took, their Sunday walk about London.  Mr Enfield recounts a horrible story where a young girl was bowled over by a hideous man, named Hyde.  He was pressed for 100 pounds and was able to pay 10 pounds in gold and 90 pounds on a check signed by a reputable man about town.

The Story of the Door, featured as a focus point for us, to want to know what evils lay beyond its threshold.
