    Dogs in Prospect Park

    walking down the long meadow

100 dogs romping in their own heaven

    mike appears

drawn by the light of their joy

    making the angel of himself

visible to me from the ground

    Scrawl

    the poet’s at peace

    with her scrawl

    long as lightning

    gets bent to letters

    long as letters

    become feast

    who cares what raw

    roast looks like

    all places

    can’t be kept perfect

    in spite of finding

    she’s trying to be

    sad that she feels

    so little laxity

    except for this

that can stay as it is

Stay Down, Be Obedient To Me

    the rain is falling

    saying

    stay down

    be obedient to me

    i’m listening from

    the church of bed

    phone away

so i don’t fondle her for nothing

    here i write

as long as i can stand to pray

    here i pray

    to regain myself with rest

later on a cast iron altar

chicken will surrender drippings to potatoes

    like me in bed

    in the rain

    sustained by the strength

    in the sacrament

    Morning Routine

    this morning a friend said

i should write a poem about coffee

    what poet hasn't

    professed their love

    of their morning ritual

    that lasting friendship

    with a warm vessel

that holds all the comfort and promise

    the day itself can’t

    these days i'm adding

a heavy pour of heavy cream

    because a man

    i thought was loving me

    was just loving

    i was standing there

    which is

    not the same

    which makes

    the mornings harder

    so i sweeten the deal

    i make with myself

to go out in the cold

and wander back for my reward

    that one pleasure

    that helps me

    begin again

    every morning
