In today's flash briefing poetry reading, Alonso Llerena returns as a guest reader. Stay tuned this weekend for the podcast version of our longer chat, or catch it on the YouTube channel! Here, he reads Javier Zamora's "Saguaros." We recorded in two different places and times, so the volume might jump around a bit, but it is worth it to hear his voice here again on the vlog's weekday readings! He contextualizes the poem expertly for you. More on Alonso Llerena -- Alonso is a poet and teacher in Washington D.C. of Peruvian descent. His work confronts being an immigrant here in the USA, but specifically as a Peruvian who left his country at a young age. His most recent work also addresses the Internal Armed Conflict Peru underwent from 1980-2000. Today, I return to the first poet -- or one of them -- that I discussed and read from on this project. In between upcoming collabs and guests, I am making it a goal to read more consistently from the same writers and books. Let me know what you think by sending me an email, a voice message on Anchor.fm, or the contact buttons and pages on my site, (thepoetryvlog.com). Today, I read the first poem I read aloud "with intent" in my undergrad, a poem introduced to me on my first day of a poetry workshop. It is "Happiness" by Robert Hass. I sometimes struggle now with Hass' work and the poetic movement in which he is situated, but poems like this bring that certain joy that only "happiness" poems can pull off when not too cliche'd. Today, I read Emily Kendal Frey's book, "The Grief Performance." I read her poem, "Your First Bed." She is a warm-hearted poet and I encourage you to look into this book and her other book, "Sorrow Arrow," yourself!
