This Flash Briefing Poetry Reading features one of my favorite students, Vicco Naylor. They read J Jennifer Espinoza's poem, "The Moon is Trans" This and the following three short readings mark the last of the academic year and this Season Two of The Poetry Vlog, with Vicco Naylor's longer chat this weekend being the last full episode of the season. It is an honor and thrill to feature a student to round out an incredible year of learning and developing these materials. Show Vicco your support by leaving ratings in iTunes or voice messages here on Anchor, and I hope you enjoy this last week of the second season of The Poetry Vlog!

About: In this episode, 2019 National Youth Poet Laureates and Ambassadors Maren Lovey Wright-Kerr, Jackson Neal, Kara Jackson, and Azura Tyabji participate in a webinar before their spoken word poetry performances at The Library of Congress. We celebrate National Poetry Month, discuss "democracy" as a complex and at times troublesome word for youth poet and artist-activists, the complex privileges and histories of performing in The Library of Congress, and each writer's intentions for their time together as the 2019 cohort.
*"speaking" typo -- Maren Lovey Wright-Kerr, not Whiting, and then Haviland Whiting!
The day after this webinar, Kara Jackson was named the 2019 National Youth Poet Laureate! Check out her episode below, but also send her your congrats. Note, too: this is not about one poet being named National Youth Poet Laureate. You'll be seeing these rad artists and activists all year as a coalitional cohort, so go say hi to them and comment below or on their sites with your appreciation!

This episode concludes a month-long literary journal, podcast, and YouTube teaching collaboration with Shirley Magazine. I chat with Co-Editor and Oregon Literary Arts Fellow, Colleen Burner, on starting the online journal, calling for submission, creating a cohesive aesthetic, and being inspired by writer Shirley Jackson. Shirley Magazine is an online Fiction and Hybrid Forms Magazine in Portland, OR, edited by Colleen Burner and Lauren Perez. For clips from the journal, listen to two-minute readings on the weekdays of April in this podcast. To read the online copy for FREE (cool!), check out the links below. Issue 13 was just released April 29th, so it's fresh beauty at the time of this posting!

About Colleen Burner:
Colleen hails from the Midwest and currently lives in Portland, OR. I am co-editor of Shirley Magazine, co-organizer of the Queen of the Night Reading Series, and a recipient of an Oregon Literary Arts Fellowship, among other awards/honors. In 2010 they received my BFA in Painting and Creative Writing from the Kansas City Art Institute; in 2014 they received their MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction) from Portland State University. They find my processes for writing, quilting, and collaging to be strikingly similar; always have an iron in the fire; look forward to cronehood.
