The Pointy Hat Cast is a movie podcast. I guess you could call it a movie review podcast. We just like movies of all types, genres, and from all time periods and talking about them!
Hosts: Barry, Sam
The Tomorrow War (2021): It was directed by Chris McKay. The screenplay was written by Zach Dean. It stars Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, and many more. Currently as of this podcast, it has a rotten tomatoes score of 52% for critics, and 78% for audience.
The Tomorrow War is probably one of the worst time travel movies I have ever seen. It is probably one of the worst action movies I have ever seen as well. It fails on both fronts mainly due to the fact that the movie tries very hard to explain how the time travel mechanic works and gives the audience too much time to realize that none of it really makes sense.
Mail Bag: What is your favorite time travel movie?
Why do they have holo sights if no one uses them?! Will we have to readjust our rating scale because of the new Suicide Squad movie?! Find out next time, on the Pointy Hat Cast!

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020): It was directed by Patty Jenkins. The screenplay was written by Patty Jenkins, Geoff Johns, and Dave Callaham. It stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, and many more.
Wonder Woman 1984 is a horrible mess of a film where it tried to tackle too many different things and ended up missing the mark for almost everything. It couldn't make up its mind on whether or not it's a kid's film or not, and even small things like sticking to a set color palette. It also misses an opportunity to delve into the theme of the strength of the individual based on truth by comparing Kristen Wig's Cheetah to Gal Godot's Wonder Woman. At least it was better than Scorpion King...or was it?
Mail Bag: Did Wonder Woman commit a heinous crime?

Topic: Bill & Ted: Face the Music (2020) It was directed by Dean Parisot. The screenplay was written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. It stars Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, Kristen Schaal, Samara Weaving, Brigette Lundy-Paine, William Sadler, Anthony Carrigan, and many more.
Bill & Ted: Face the Music feels like it took the best parts of Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey and combined them together into a modernized package that still maintains the incredibly wholesome, pure, and funny spirit of the original movies. There is really no sense of cynicism throughout the whole film and the positive, can do attitude is something that resonates with what we are lacking for the current times.

Topic: The Martian (2015) It was directed by Ridley Scott. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard. It stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Sean Bean, and many more.
The Martian is an incredibly well crafted adaptation of the book of the same title, written by Andy Weir. It does a fantastic job of condensing the science parts down into digestible chunks and inserts enough action and drama to hook the viewer in. Personally, I'd like the movie to be extra long and focus more on the science but that would probably make for a more mundane viewing experience for everyone else. The Martian is the perfect compromise of staying true to the source material while making it entertaining. It also has poo potatoes. Pootatoes.
Mail Bag: What is your favorite space movie?

Topic: Birds of Prey (2020) It was directed by Cathy Yan. The screenplay was written by Christina Hodson. It stars Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett, Ewan McGregor, and many more.
Birds of Prey is a pretty solid film compared to previous DC films. It has straight forward and coherent editing, the pacing is great, and the movie moves away from the drab dreariness of Gotham and introduces more color into the world. The movie does have some flaws, most of it being the inconsistencies in tone. The movie was trying to toe the line between ultra violence and cartoon violence and it's hard to do both. It also tried to go to 11 at all times in respect to over the top humor so the few serious moments in the movie felt unearned. Overall though, the movie was more fun than we expected, and enjoyable.
Mail Bag: What is your favorite DC movie so far?

Topic: Moon (2009) in the US. It was directed by Duncan Jones. The screenplay was written by Duncan Jones and Nathan Parker. It stars Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey, Dominique McElligott, and many more.
Moon is a great sci-fi movie in that it focuses on modern day problems and projects it into the near future to show the exaggerated effects of the problem. Not only that, it's a great character study and Sam Rockwell's performance is incredible. The only minor nitpicks we could make is that a few of the props looked a little too low budget and some of the science was not realistic but it's all forgivable due to the strength of the script and Sam Rockwell's performance.

Topic: Warcraft (2016) was directed by Duncan Jones and written by Charles Leavitt and Duncan Jones. It stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Robert Kazinsky, and many more.
Warcraft is a decent attempt at adapting a video game into a movie. While the overall production values were great, especially the combat scenes, the film was underdeveloped on many fronts. The characters and their relationships were underdeveloped and required the viewer to fill in many missing elements from the lore. The pacing was plagued with unnecessary scenes and could have been better edited for brevity and to give other, more vital scenes some space to breathe and be digested. Overall, while flawed, there's still certainly a lot of fun to be had for fans of the game or for fans of fantasy in general.

Topic: Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) directed by Jeff Fowler, written by Pat Casey, and Josh Miller. Starring Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter, and many more.
Sonic the Hedgehog is an entertaining and wholesome kid's movie that is well constructed enough to have enough appeal for adults as well. The movie is simple in its construction but it's completely serviceable. Sonic looks pretty great, compared to the abomination that was in the original trailer. Jim Carrey also has a fantastic return to the silver screen with his trademark antics.
Mail Bag: Does Sonic have lore?

Topic: Detective Pikachu (2019) directed by Rob Letterman, written by Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit, Rob Letterman, and Derek Connolly. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy, Ken Watanabe, and many more.
Detective Pikachu is a very entertaining and solidly constructed kids film that can be enjoyed by everyone. It follows the trusted action film formula of dispensing a little bit of narrative and then following it up with an action scene. It's serviceable and the humor from Ryan Reynolds being Ryan Reynolds carry the slower parts. While it does have flaws, it also has Pokemon. So many Pokemon. And they're all cute! Also, beware the Ditto...

Topic: Real Steel (2011) directed by Shawn Levy, written by John Gatins , Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand and many more.
Real Steel is a wholesome (minus some swearing), by the numbers, family film where a washed up, sleazy character is transformed into a father and a decent human being. Also robots punch each other until they explode. Someone think of the robots! Robots are people too..wait a minute.
Mail Bag: What movie would you want an anime version of?
