Welcome to the Political Trenches: Local Government At Work.

Our guest today is Reeve Paul McLauchlin President of the Rural Municipal of Alberta.

The Province of Alberta has been looking at changing how Municipalities operate, run in elections, work under emergencies, and are funding with a trifecta of bills that have been released in the last month and a half.

Bill 18 - Defending Alberta’s Provincial Priorities would require the federal government to work with the province to fund any municipal issues.

Bill 20 - Municipal Staties Amendment Act of 2024 would allow the province to amend or repeal any bylaw that a municipality passes if the province deems it not int he provinces interest. It would also introduce political parties at the municipal level in two cities before extending it potential all municipalities after the next election.

And Finally Bill 21- Emergency Statutes Amendment Act. If passed, the bill would give the province sweeping authority to seize control over local emergencies.

So today we will discuss these bills and the ramifications on provincial municipal relations - and the state of rural municipalities in 2024.
