Foreign Fighters and Mercenaries Fueling Libyan Conflict by Joseph Hammond reads like a novel but it is a true story of how if the United States does not start paying attention to Africa it could come back to haunt us. Here is a small snippet from the story that will give you an idea of what we talked about.

The presence of large groups of foreign fighters in Libya is in striking contrast to other regional conflicts. The Syrian Civil War and the larger struggle against the Assad regime, for example, has attracted lone jihadists from around the world.  The Libyan Civil war, by contrast, has attracted entire military units and terrorist groups are joining the conflict. Notable examples include Da'esh, possibly Hamas, as well as rebel movements from nations in the Sahel region of Africa.

Washington Bureau Chief Jim Williams is joined by a former member of the George W. Bush admiration Alan Steinberg as they tie up some loose political ends. The entertaining political duo talk about the #MeToo movement, the new GOP tax law and the future of the all-important CHIP program.

The Senate passed the final version of the tax bill early Wednesday morning. It overhauls the tax code and cuts corporate tax rates, but Democrats and critics say the plan will primarily benefit the wealthy and corporations.

The GOP has argued that by cutting taxes for corporations, businesses will reinvest their savings in their workers by raising wages. But Williams and Steinberg explain why the GOP numbers just don't add up. 

Also, will the CHIP program needs to be funded by Dec. 31st. The bi-partisan program provides health insurance coverage for just shy of nine million children whose families have too much income to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford the cost of insurance. It is increasingly used by families whose employer-provided insurance is too expensive.

CHIP is provided for free or the program's premiums are pegged to an amount based on a family's annual income.

CHIP has come into the news lately because Congress has not yet reauthorized its funding mechanism and, as a result, states are running out of money. Once the money runs out, potentially hundreds of thousands -- if not millions -- of low-income kids could lose their health insurance. That could be a dire situation for some families.

Despite overwhelming opposition from Congress, technical experts, advocacy organizations and, of course, the American people, the FCC has voted to eliminate 2015’s Open Internet Order and the net neutrality protections it established. As expected, the vote was 3 to 2 along party lines, with Chairman Ajit Pai and Republican Commissioners Brendan Carr and Michael O’Rielly voting in favor of the order, and Democratic Commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel voting against.

We also try to make sense of the proposed GOP Tax plan that could be passed as soon as next week.

Tal Heinrich of i24News gave me a real insiders view of what it means to both Isreal and the Middle East to have the United States Embassy moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. President Donald Trump made the announcement keeping a campaign promise and in the process starting a controversy

We think that the good people are not stupid enough to send a man like Roy Moore to Washington. But if we have learned one thing it there is a chance Moore will get elected and that would be bad for Alabama and for the United States.

The Alabama Senate race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones, a special election to be held on November 12th. At the moment the Democrat Jones has taken a slight lead in the race. He is talking about the issues and steering clear of anything relating to his opponent.  

Moore is the firebrand politician who at last count five women have accused him of sexual assault, including molesting one who was only 14 years old at the time. The Business Insider has done a great job of listing and giving background of those brave ladies. PLEASE READ.

Meanwhile, on the Democratic side Sen. Al Franken, accused of groping and kissing a radio host 11 years ago, recently condemned Harvey Weinstein for the sexual assault allegations against him, but regularly joked about vile acts before entering professional politics.

 

 

As we know the recent series of wildfires that struck northern California's wine country and portions of the foothills northeast of Sacramento on Oct. 8 has generated more than $3.3 billion in covered losses, with the vast majority occurring in wine country.
