March 18, 2022 8. Darryl Sharpton | Comfortably Odd | PART 1
Darryl Sharpton is one of the only athletes I know who is 5’11” and listed at 5’11” on paper. For comparison, if you Google “Jonathan Weislow Height” I am listed at 6’1.” Daryl might actually be taller than me. This guy has always been comfortable in his own skin. He is about as difficult to profile or predict as anyone I’ve ever met. He’s a walking anomaly. He doesn’t curse. He played the violin growing up. He made prank call CDs in high school and recorded a comedy album. Darryl is about as self-aware as they come.
After retiring from football, his addiction to entrepreneurship led to the formation of two different furniture companies - Edloe Finch and Albany Park. He actually sold them since we recorded this episode. For this reason, Daryl and I decided to break this session into two parts and re-record "Part 2" after the sale of his furniture empire. Today, enjoy "Part 1" as we explore the foundation of Darryl’s mindset that set him up for one hell of a second half.

New Year. New You. That whole thing. Happy 2022.
If you frequent the "Self-Help" section or follow motivational and entrepreneurial social media, you've probably done mental laps on "learning from failure". It's a bit cliche at this point, but there's merit to the concept.
Jesus Diaz AKA "Chef Yisus" doesn't use the term "failure" very often. He refers to these experiences as learning opportunities; training sessions to prepare him for the next opportunity at the right time. And let me tell you, seizing opportunities is this guy's DNA.
He used baseball as a vehicle to get him from Caracas, Venezuela to the USA. He didn't make it to the Major Leagues, but that was never his goal. While playing baseball, he developed a passion for cooking. He learned all elements of the restaurant business from the kitchen, service, food distribution, to finally owning his own restaurant.

The restaurant closed, but the man was stronger for the effort. The relationships he made put him in a position to land a position as the mainstay chef on Univision's Despierta América, cooking on national television daily. He recently won "Mira Quien Baila," the Latin version of "Dancing with the Stars" and is gearing up to get back in the arena of restaurant ownership in 2022 - this time with wiser and hungrier (pun intended) than ever.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing what Chef Yisus V2.0 has in store for all of us this year and for years to come.

Here's the thing about Michael Floyd. Big picture, he had a successful 8 year career in the NFL and won a Super Bowl. But if you Google his name, you'll inevitably immediately come across a story about him being released from the Cardinals for a DUI in 2016 after falling asleep in his Escalade during a night out in Miami. For the record, that's not too uncommon in Miami.
For that single event to be one of the premier lines that becomes publicly synonymous with Michael Floyd is a sin.
The man values the simplest things in this life. Family, friendship, loyalty, and hard work. He comes from extremely humble beginnings in St. Paul, MInnessotta, where he made the close friendships that still comprise the majority of his social circle.
There's no flare - no razzle dazzle - and no theatrics to the way he goes about his business. He's a humble man that has learned from his mis-steps and will undoubtedbly be defined by his
dedication, loyalty and service to those close to him.

November 01, 2021 5. Greivis Vasquez | Cultivating Confidence
GV is just a different dude. He’s 6’6” so you can’t miss him, but other than that, he’s quite unassuming. He’s unpolished and dresses like he’s heading from his fridge to his couch, but he would fit right in at a classy dinner. His English is very imperfect, but he is incredibly deliberate and articulate in his communication. His demeanor is dominant and impressive, yet also disarming and inviting. His humility is calming and welcoming, yet somehow invigorating. Be warned: do not underestimate this man for a second. He believes he can do anything, because if he chooses to try, he probably can. I don’t want to give too much away, because his story warrants the firsthand perspective and enthusiasm only he can bring to it. Here are the highlights: He was born in Caracas Venezuela where really nobody plays basketball at a high level and somehow managed to play his way to a scholarship at Montrose Christian.. where he was teammates with Kevin Durant. He went on to become a legend at the University of Maryland earning ACC Player of the Year honors in 2010. He was a first round draft pick of the Memphis Grizzlies and played in the NBA for 6 seasons before finally retiring due to injury in 2016. Since retiring, Greivis has gone on to pursue multiple entrepreneurial ventures including starting his own sports agency, youth sports programs, and a recording studio (GV - let me know when we can book some studio time, thanks.) It’s also important to note, that if there is ever a delay in his responses to your text messages, he’s not ignoring you, he’s probably taking his kids to soccer practice or coaching a basketball or soccer game. The man doesn’t stop and it is electric to be around. Enjoy!

September 22, 2021 4. Jemile Weeks | Me 2 We
Jemile has been signing autographs since he was a kid growing up in Altamonte Springs, FL. His brother was the second overall pick in the MLB draft in 2003. Jemile was an 8th rounder out of high school where he turned down a heavy 6 figure bonus to then play at the University of Miami (🙌). He was an All-American in college, leading Miami to 2 College World Series appearances. He played on team USA, and became the 12th overall pick by the Oakland A’s. His first year in 'The Show' with Oakland, he was damn near Rookie of the Year. He went on to play 6 seasons in the major leagues....before abruptly being forced to retire due to epileptic seizures in 2018 ((insert skidding tires sound effect))...
While everything above represents a multitude of individual accomplishments for Jemile, he’ll be the first to give the credit to his family for instilling deep seeded values, work ethic, and discipline in his mindset. He's also hyper-aware most kids growing up aren't as fortunate. Immediately after Jemile finished playing, he set out on a mission to provide educational, athletic, and life skills resources to local underserved youth. Jemile is currently CEO of WeFam and one of the most driven people I know, led by his pursuit to change the narrative in underserved youth communities.

August 23, 2021 3. Brian Monroe | Loyalty Makes You Family
What is family? If you ask Brian Monroe, It begins and ends with loyalty. For the record, I'll tell you the same thing. Brian talks about the theme of reciprocity and how his honesty and self awareness have always led to deeper relationships which cultivate social currency. Brian has always understood the importance of authenticity and despite critics or popular opinion, has always stayed true to his own beliefs. Brian is outspoken, direct, shameless, and about as real as it gets. Brian Monroe was the punter for the Miami football program from 2003-2006. Playing alongside some of the greatest names to ever play the game of football, Brian quickly learned humility and respect. These traits have continued to carry him through life after sport, where Brian currently serves as an analyst on the Miami Hurricanes pre and post game shows. Brian can also be found on ALLCANES radio where he serves as a much better podcast host than I am.

I know there is already a television show out titled 'Dave' and I love Lil Dicky, but I believe the story of Dave Neal would be an equally as entertaining self-titled biopic. Dave is a former basketball player at the University of Maryland. He was always one of those guys who was able to burn it at both ends and left you wondering how he was able to do everything with such little finesse, perceivably defying logic (and physics), and continually find success. I think Dave's strong personality and extensive participation in the social scene often overshadowed his hard work and persistence to extend the limits of his God-given physical abilities. Dave is a guy who isn't shy to self disclose and loves to open up about how his transition out of sport really affected him mentally. He attributes a successful transition to a supportive network of friends and family, and perhaps most importantly, to being self-aware enough to recognize when he needed help and then being humble enough to ask for it.

July 01, 2021 1. Marcus Ginyard | The Mayor of Limoges
Marcus is a really eclectic guy. He's had such a vast and accomplished experience playing basketball and his approach to opportunities and situations has always intrigued me. He's never been what you would expect him to be and never strived to be anyone other than himself. I think perhaps that's what's enabled him to play professional basketball into his mid thirties. His career started as he had envisioned it; winning a conference championship in high-school and getting recruited as a sophomore to play at the University of North Carolina. His Junior year, when he was team captain, he won a national championship, but it didn't play out like it did in his head.. From that point forward his career was filled with obstacles and road forks that, time and time again, he successfully overcame. Dude is resilient and it's clear that his grit and persistent approach will undoubtedly lead to success in anything he touches.
He's played for 13 different teams in 9 different countries and has most recently come back for a second stint with the Limoges Cercle Saint-Pierre (CSP). He has a contract with them through 2023, when he'll be 36. He's been able to develop such an authentic relationship with this French town that they've written articles dubbing him "The Mayor of Limoges". He has a clothing line coming out called "Le Maire" ("The Mayor"). I mean... I've spent 15 years in Miami and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt.
His ability to truly connect (not superficially "network") and his international experiences have given him a really special perspective on life I believe we can all learn from.
