The Potato Field with Spudman

As culinary director of Potatoes USA, RJ Harvey is responsible for creating potato recipes that will excite chefs, foodservice operators and consumers. He’s created hundreds of recipes and worked with thousands of people to educate on the health benefits and versatility of potatoes.

Nora Olsen, our 2021 Spudwoman of the Year, joins "The Potato Field" to talk about her career at the University of Idaho, which has focused largely on improving potato storage practices. Olsen's work has been implemented by potato growers around the world.

Brothers Connor and David Wallace of Washington’s Skagit Valley grew up in farming, but took unusual roads through college and professionally before returning to the family's potato farm. That included stops at Amazon and other big-tech companies. Their experiences have led to a formation of a new agriculture tech company — CODA Farm Technologies — which is focused on solving problems with mobile sprinkler reels and pumps with big-tech knowledge.

2020 National Potato Council President — and Spudwoman of the Year — Britt Raybould of Raybould Brothers Farms joins Zeke Jennings on the “The Potato Field” to talk about what growing up on an Idaho potato farm means to her, issues facing the industry, experience as an Idaho state representative and why water security is a passion.

The challenging water situation in Northern Colorado in the early 21st century had Strohauer Farms looking to adapt. Today, the longtime potato growers not only grow conventional, but a wide range of organic and specialty potatoes. The father-daughter team of Harry and Amber Strohauer joins “The Potato Field” to share their farm’s evolution.

Hartline sits down with “The Potato Field” to discuss his role at Alsum Farms & Produce in Wisconsin, technological advancements that excite him, such as RNAi, and plenty of other potato-related topics.

Grant Morris was recently called one of the “premier growers” in the Columbia Basin by a fellow grower. Morris, a partner of Schneider Farms-Pasco, joins “The Potato Field” to talk about the impact of COVID on the processing potato industry, interacting with elected officials, why every new potato variety gets compared to the Russet Burbank and more.

As manager of Walther Farms’ mid-Michigan operation, Guthry Laurie has a hand in supplying potato chip makers with plenty of product. Laurie joins The Potato Field podcast to talk about the diverse soil and weather conditions in Michigan — which produces more chip potatoes than any other state — sustainability and taking on an industry leadership role. Laurie was voted by his peers as the outstanding student in the 2020 Potato Industry Leadership Institute.
