Dr. Adam Fahrenholz is an Associate Professor in the Prestage Department of Poultry Science at North Carolina State University and focuses his research on feed manufacturing technology, regulatory compliance, and feed manufacturing process management. Moreover, Dr. Fahrenholz coordinates the Feed Milling Program, which incorporates an undergraduate minor, and both undergraduate and graduate certificates; teaches courses on feed milling technology, quality assurance, and facility and process management; and oversees the operation of NC State’s Feed Mill Education Unit and its academic, research, and extension missions. Moreover, he serves as an industry consultant and coordinator of an extension program that focuses on industry education, the provision of resources for developing programs associated with regulatory compliance, and continuous quality and process improvement in feed manufacturing facilities.

Maro Ibarburu is a research associate with the Egg Industry Center at Iowa State University. His main responsibilities are analyzing the economics of the U.S. egg industry, providing marketing and statistical information and flock projections to producers and allied industries. Maro holds an agricultural economics master degree from Iowa State University. Ibarburu's role has required him to initiate several special reports diving into specific issues affecting U.S. egg markets. He travels domestically and internationally to give presentations and learn about production systems and their related impacts on the cost of production.

Dr. Lilong Chai is an Assistant Professor and Engineering Specialist at the Department of Poultry Science of the University of Georgia (UGA) and a member of the UGA Phenomics and Plant Robotics Center & Integrative Precision Agriculture team. His primary research and extension interests include animal environmental engineering and precision poultry farming. Prior to joining UGA, Dr. Chai was a Postdoc Research Associate at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering of Iowa State University (ISU)., where he led field studies on commercial farms for two USDA-NIFA programs for improving indoor air quality of cage-free egg production facilities and for exploring practical means of preventing and controlling airborne infectious poultry diseases, such as avian influenza. His contributions include 110 scientific publications and 15 awards/honors. Dr. Chai is currently the Coordinator of Georgia Precision Poultry Farming Conference and Georgia Layer Conference, Chair of ASABE-Environment & Air Quality Committee, and President-Elect of Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological, and Food Engineers (AOCABFE).

Dr. Wilmer Pacheco has obtained his Bachelor Degree in Food Science and Technology at the Pan-American School of Agriculture, in Honduras. Shortly afterwards, he moved to North Carolina, where he joined a feed milling manager trainee program with Murphy Brown LLC and became the night shift supervisor, responsible for overseeing the production of approximately 10,000 tons of pelleted feed per week. Then, he obtained a Scholarship at the Poultry Department at North Carolina State University, where he also earned his Master's Degree in Poultry Science and his Doctorate in Physiology and Nutrition. In 2014, he joined the Department of Poultry Science of Auburn University, where he has been working as Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist. His research focuses on the interrelationships between feed milling, nutrition, and physiology on poultry performance. Dr. Wilmer has written more than 100 popular press and research articles and has been invited to present lectures in more than 12 countries.

Measuring emotion and affective state in chickens is quite a novel and complex field of study in poultry welfare. And that’s the central theme of this episode: the nuances and difficulties in evaluating the emotions of chickens. So I talked to Dr. Leonie Jacobs about the importance of understanding poultry behavior and response to different environments and resources, as well as practices to evaluate and improve it. As a tenure-track faculty member , her aim is to improve the welfare of production animals, and her current research is focused on quantifying and determining emotion and positive affect, sustainable poultry agriculture, and the benefits of environmental complexity for poultry.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Bruce Stewart-Brown has earned his BS and DVM in Animal Science from Iowa State University and he is a Diplomate from the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. He joined Perdue Foods in 1998 and is currently the Senior Vice President of Technical Service and Innovation. In his present role, he is responsible for technical support (nutritional, veterinary, laboratorial, the continuous improvement of live operations, welfare programs, and compliance) as well as technical innovation (turning innovative technologies from just good ideas into real changes within Perdue Foods’ everyday business). Those responsibilities include 11 feed mills, 15 hatcheries, and the health and care of 13 million chickens – placed weekly on family farms throughout the 14 states that Perdue raises chickens. He has been guiding the company’s industry-leading transformation in how chickens are raised and he was vital in the company’s successful shift away from antibiotics. Prior to joining Perdue, he was the Director of Global Technical Services for poultry at various companies such as Salisbury Labs, Solvay Animal Health, and Fort Dodge Animal Health.

Poultry production includes more than just one species. Each one of them has its own characteristics, so production for each species is conducted differently. There are many differences between turkeys and chickens when it comes to nutrition, general management, facilities, and behavior, so the more you know about the particularities, the more effective your production will be. 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Sally Noll has been serving at the University of Minnesota since 1985. She has over 30 years of extension experience in all aspects of turkey production and broiler chicken production, and the focus of her research and extension programming is turkey/poultry nutrition and disease/health issues of relevance to the poultry industry. Because of the extension appointment, her research and extension program vary depending on assessed needs for problem solving in poultry production. 

Past collaborative projects of hers include evaluations of production systems, environmental impacts on turkey production, biosecurity approaches, ammonia emissions from turkey facilities, gut health and microbiome succession, and areas with problems related to reovirus-arthritis and avian metapneumovirus. Her poultry research program has been recently focusing on nutritional evaluation of feed ingredients, protein/amino acid requirements, and evaluation of a partially slotted flooring system for commercial market turkeys.

There are many differences between backyard poultry operations and commercial poultry systems. Backyard poultry can include pets as well as animals as a food source – such as eggs – and diseases can be introduced into the flock in many ways that are unnoticed by the owner. And besides, it’s often a challenge for backyard growers to recognize and associate different clinical signs with different diseases. Consequently, a good poultry diagnostician working in that sector must educate their customers and promote small flock health and preventive care. In today’s episode, Dr. Karen Grogan has a great conversation with Dr. Hailey Quercia about some of her findings on health challenges in small flocks. 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Hailey Quercia’s interest in poultry began when raising chickens, ducks, and geese, which also piqued her interest in population level animal health. It was only after shadowing a mixed animal practitioner that she realized there were veterinary careers that focus on population medicine, and she decided to become a large animal veterinarian. After receiving her DVM from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, she was undecided on whether to focus on dairy, poultry, or pathology, but finally chose to become a poultry diagnostician. She thus earned a Master’s on and did a residency in avian pathology at Auburn University, subsequently accepting the position of Laboratory Director and Avian Diagnostician at the Harrisonburg Regional Animal Health Laboratory (Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services).

Consequently, we must consider the environmental impact of animal production activities and the challenges of implementing environmentally friendly alternatives to the animal production system. Would that become a conventional production instead of a niched production? How economically sustainable is it for the animal producers? 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Ermias Kebreab is Associate Dean and holds the Sesnon Endowed Chair in Sustainable Agriculture. His research interests include animal nutrition, mathematical modeling of biological systems, and environmental impacts of livestock. He is contributing author to 2019 IPCC update on enteric methane emissions. He co-chaired the feed additive and methane committees of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - FAO. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles and received several awards including Excellence in Ruminant Nutrition and International Agriculture from the American Society of Animal Science, and 2022 Chancellor’s Innovator of the year award. He served on two committees of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on methane and nutrition of dairy cattle. He is regularly an invited speaker including a TED talk. His research was in the top 10 of all research conducted at the University of California system in 2021. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Asmara, Eritrea and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Reading, U.K.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Joseph Giambrone is a professor emeritus in Auburn University’s Department of Poultry Science with a joint appointment in the Department of Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine. A molecular virologist, immunologist, and epidemiologist, he has been working on understanding viral pathogen ecology for 42 years. As well as developing new and effective vaccines, he led efforts to improve the detection and surveillance of viral diseases. He also developed vaccine strategies to protect commercially grown chickens against pathogens, like avian influenza viruses, that have infected humans. His research has had a profound impact on practices used today to reduce the incidence and severity of viral diseases in commercially grown poultry.
