Welcome
Let me ask you something, and I want you to think about how you actually respond, not how you think you should respond.
Have you ever felt like you were supposed to do something… but you held back because you didn’t feel “at peace” about it yet?
You told yourself you’d move once you felt settled. Once the tension went away. Once everything inside you lined up and felt calm.
But instead of clarity coming, you just stayed stuck… waiting.
And the longer you waited, the more uncertain you felt.
This is for you if…you’ve been delaying something you know God is asking you to do because you’re waiting to feel completely at peace first.
Let’s talk about that, because this is where a lot of people quietly get stuck.
Bottom Line Up Front
If you wait for peace before you obey, you may never move.
OUR SPRINGBOARD FOR TODAY’S DISCUSSION IS:
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”— Philippians 4:7 (ESV)
Main Teaching
I want to walk you through something that took me a while to really understand, because it sounds right on the surface but breaks down when you actually live it out.
A lot of people have been taught to follow peace as a signal for direction. The idea is that if you feel peace about something, that’s confirmation from God, and if you don’t, then you should hold off.
That sounds good, but it creates a problem.
Because obedience often doesn’t feel peaceful at the beginning.
Think about the moments when God has nudged you into something that required courage. A hard conversation. Stepping into leadership. Walking away from something comfortable. Forgiving someone who hasn’t earned it.
Those moments rarely feel calm.
They feel tense. They feel uncertain. Sometimes they even feel uncomfortable enough that you want to back away.
If you’re waiting for everything inside you to settle before you move, you’re setting a condition that God never required.
Peace, the way Scripture talks about it, isn’t always a green light before action. A lot of times, it’s a result of alignment after action.
That verse in Philippians says the peace of God will guard your heart and mind. It doesn’t say it will guide your every decision before you take a step. It says it will guard you. That’s something that happens as you walk with Him, not necessarily before you start moving.
Let me say it another way.
Peace is not always the starting point. It’s often the byproduct.
And if you’ve been waiting for it to show up first, that could be the very thing keeping you from moving.
I’ve seen this in my own life more times than I can count. The moments I delayed because I didn’t feel settled were usually the same moments where I already knew what I was supposed to do. I just didn’t like how it felt.
But when I finally stepped into it, something shifted.
Not instantly, not always in a dramatic way, but there was a settling that came after I moved. Not before.
That’s the part people don’t talk about enough.
We want confirmation that removes all discomfort, but God is often asking for trust in the middle of it.
There’s another angle to this that matters.
Sometimes what we call a lack of peace is really just internal resistance.
It’s your desire to stay where things feel safe. It’s your reluctance to deal with what obedience might bring. And if you mistake that resistance for a spiritual signal, you’ll keep backing away from the very things that would grow you.
Isaiah puts it this way:
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”— Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
Notice the order.
Trust comes first.
Peace follows.
So when you’re sitting there waiting to feel completely at peace before you act, the better question might be this:
Am I waiting on God… or am I waiting for my feelings to catch up?
Because those are not the same thing.
Let me bring this back to where you’re living right now.
There’s probably something specific you’ve been holding off on. Not because you don’t know, but because you don’t feel settled enough to move.
And I want you to hear this clearly.
You don’t need to feel perfect peace to take the next step.
You need to trust God enough to take it anyway.
And as you move, as you step into what you already know is right, that’s where peace starts to show up in a real, grounded way.
Not as a signal before the fact, but as a guard while you walk it out.
Closing Whisper (Prayer)
Father, I can see where I’ve been waiting for my feelings to line up instead of trusting what You’ve already shown me. Help me stop using that as a reason to delay. Give me the courage to move forward even when it feels uncomfortable. Teach me to trust You first and allow Your peace to meet me as I walk in obedience. Steady my heart and guide my steps. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Coffee and Calling
If this hit something you’ve been holding back on, don’t keep waiting.
Take the next step you already know is there.
And if you want to keep growing in hearing God clearly and moving with confidence, you can support what we’re building here:
Let’s stop waiting on a feeling and start walking in trust.
