Five thousand characters. That's what you get to explain why you want to be a PA.

In this one I go through what a strong personal statement actually does. It answers the prompt. It shows you understand the PA role specifically, not healthcare in general. And it tells a story only you could tell.

The pitfalls are predictable, which is good news, because that means you can avoid them. Opening with a dictionary definition. Listing your resume in paragraph form. Writing about a patient without ever getting to what it changed in you. Saying "I want to help people" and stopping there.

The writing itself is the last step. The real work is the reflection before it, and the editing after.

You got in. Now what actually happens?

This is the episode I'd hand to anyone holding an acceptance letter. First come the logistics - deposit, background check, immunizations, all the paperwork that shows up fast.

Then didactic year. For most programs that's Monday through Friday, roughly 8 to 5, in class or lab. Anatomy, pharmacology, clinical medicine, physical exam skills. It's a full-time job with homework, and the volume is the part that gets people. It's not harder material than undergrad - there's just so much more of it, coming so much faster.

Then clinical year, when you rotate through specialties and finally start feeling like you might actually be able to do this.

Provisional and probation sound similar. They are not the same thing, and confusing them can cost you.

Provisional accreditation means the program is new. ARC-PA has reviewed the plan and approved them to start, and they'll be evaluated again as students move through. New programs are fine. Some of the best-run programs I know were provisional once.

Probation is different. It means an established program isn't currently meeting standards and has to fix things. That's the one worth asking hard questions about.

Why this matters: your accreditation status affects whether you can sit for the PANCE and get licensed. Before you apply anywhere, look up the program on the ARC-PA site and know exactly what you're looking at.

The single biggest CASPA surprise: your GPA is probably not what you think it is.

CASPA counts every course you've taken. That class you retook? Both grades count. The semester you'd rather forget from your first year of college? Still in there. Your school might replace grades, but CASPA doesn't.

And once your application is verified, that GPA is locked for the cycle. Retaking a class in July doesn't change what programs see. So calculate it before you apply, not after.

I went part-time. Here's why.

Going back to derm after maternity leave was harder than I expected, and not in a way I could push through by being more organized. I wanted more time with my family, and I was in a profession that actually lets you do something about that. So I did.

That flexibility is one of the genuinely great things about being a PA, and I don't think students hear it enough. Full-time, part-time, per diem, switching specialties - those doors stay open. Your first job is not a life sentence.
