PCE, HCE, shadowing, volunteering. Nobody explains the difference well, so let's fix that.
This is the audio from one of my experience webinars, and it's the question I get more than any other. What counts? What doesn't? How many hours do I actually need? And why does one program say 500 and another say 2,000?
The short answer is that every program defines this differently, and CASPA's categories don't always match what a specific school wants. So you have to check. But there are patterns, and once you understand what programs are actually looking for, you stop chasing hours and start choosing experience that makes you a better applicant.
I also get into how to write your experiences up on CASPA, because a great job described badly reads like a bad job.
What I cover:
- Patient care experience vs. healthcare experience, and how CASPA splits them
- Which jobs typically count as PCE and which ones surprise people
- How many hours you realistically need to be competitive
- Where shadowing fits in and how much is enough
- Whether volunteering has to be medical to matter
- How to write experience descriptions that actually help you
