Katie Belknap and Solomon Lowenstein are the founders of the Creative Sanctuary in Arcata, CA. I talked all about the organization's programming with Daniel Nickerson a couple episodes ago.

For my conversation with Katie and Sol, we focused on how they got where they are today and all the other work they do as creatives and craftspeople. That includes owning real estate, gardening, sewing, beekeeping and selling honey, specialized/creative carpentry and preservation work, printmaking, ceramics, and lots of other forms of art.

Cody and Elizabeth Baldwin were the founders of En Root House, a hostel in Chatanooga, TN. Since our chat, they sold the house to someone who’s keeping it a hostel, fortunately. They’re currently driving across the U.S. with plans to move to Vietnam in January to root down and teach English for a bit. They’re also in the infancy stage of launching a new online business called Lyfe of Inquiry!

Bobbilee Hartman is the founder of Lodged Out, the organizer of Rails Camp retreats in the U.S., and has been an engineer for the past five years. Over the past year, she has begun to transition out of her engineering career to work on Lodged Out full-time. Through Lodged Out, Bobbilee offers outdoorsy, unplugged retreats. She runs one public retreat a year and organizes private, custom events for groups.

Daniel Nickerson is a musician, music engineer, and program manager at The Creative Sanctuary in Arcata, CA. I met him when I was a resident at The Sanctuary this May. His dedication to the local arts community and producing genuine, authentic music and art is admirable.

Brea Grant is an actress, director, writer, producer, comic book and graphic novel creator, and podcaster. She’s a busy woman. Much of her work is focused on the horror and sci-fi genres. She’s played characters on *Friday Night Lights*, *Heroes*, *Dexter*, and has starred in several films.

She co-wrote and co-directed the apocalyptic feature, *Best Friends Forever*, which premiered at Slamdance. She also directed the award-winning and very funny short, *Feminist Campfire Stories*. She wrote and created the Nerdist series, *The Real Housewives of Horror* and has written multiple comic books including “We Will Bury You” and the “Suicide Girls” comic. She produced the third season of the Emmy-nominated show LGBT series, *EastSiders*, which can currently be seen on Netflix.

Brea recently directed an episode of the comedy series, *Dirtbags* and co-wrote the feature film, *I Can’t Be Trusted with Time Travel*, which is currently in post. Finally, she does a weekly podcast on the Maximum Fun network about reading and books called Reading Glasses.

We had a great conversation and lots of laughs about the realities of working in the entertainment industry and finding your way. Brea also gave us an inside look into how the casting and writing processes work, how the industry has changed, and her personal path to doing what she loves full-time. My favorite thing about this episode is that Marti and Kari are getting married on Sunday! With an education in architecture, Kari is a drafter for a high-end millwork company. She's also a super talented ceramicist. Marti is a designer and the co-founder of Bridge + Bloom, an innovative branding studio based in St. Petersburg, FL.

Kari and Marti candidly share their journey in learning how to communicate, give each other space, support each other, and evolve together. We also talk a lot about business stuff—essentially the process of figuring it out and learning as you go. I love how different this episode is from all the others.

Lewis Weil is the founder of Money Positive, a financial planning company based in Austin, TX and working with clients across the country.

A biologist for over a decade, Lewis was a self-proclaimed money nerd on the side. When he realized some of the smartest people he knew were clueless when it came to money management, he started dabbling with planning on the side. As he learned the industry wasn’t built to help most people – the average person – he started his own company. What started as a side project turned into a full-time career very quickly.
