We have discovered that we can hear God speaking through the sounds of the natural realm around us and through the still, small voice in the internal realm within us. In this chapter we will explore how we are hardwired to hear Him in the heavenly realm. Simply defined this is, hearing with our physical ears the audible sounds and voices of the heavenly realm. Audible means: “able to be heard with the natural ear.” How awesome is it that God communicates to His sons and daughters in this way?

Many of those who heard the audible voice of the Lord throughout the scriptures described it as: the sound of many waters, thunder, and harpists playing on their harps. Though these are some of the more magnificent descriptions of God’s audible voice, if we are honest this may seem to be the rarest of ways that we hear Him. Why is that?

In John 12:28-29, notice there were three responses to the audible voice of God. They all heard the same sound but interpreted it differently. Some thought it had thundered, others recognized it as being spiritual but did not attribute it to God’s voice and then there were those who knew it was the voice of God. Let’s explore each of these groups of people for a greater understanding in hearing God’s audible voice for us today and choose which group we want to be in.

God speaking through dreams and visions is not meant to be exclusive or exceptional. In the Old Testament God identified dreams and visions as a primary way that He would speak to His prophets. Let’s look at what He said in the book of Numbers,

“Hear now my words:
If there is a prophet among you,
I, the LORD, shall make myself known to him in a vision,
I shall speak with him in a dream.” Numbers 12:6

We see that God takes the initiative to speak to prophets through visions and dreams, but it wasn’t just the particularly gifted or important people who heard Him speak in dreams. Kings, queens, children, men, women, slaves, prisoners and prophets are all recorded as those who heard God speaking to them through their internal hearing receptors with dreams and visions.

In this episode Bethany explores how we can hear God speak to us through dreams and visions, not just see Him speak in those ways.

God is speaking through the natural realm around us but He is also speaking to our internal realm—through our thoughts and inner voice.
