The psalmist is frustrated and pleas for justice. He needs God to defend him from his enemies. However, the writer knows that there is hope in God, and clings onto that.

David is longing for God's presence.

Verses 6 and 7: The Hermonites lived in the slopes of Mount Hermon, which is located on the borders of Syria and Lebanon. Mount Hermon is 9,232 feet above sea level and is the highest point in Syria and Israel. The mountain's peak can be spotted from over 60 miles away.

Verse 6: The hill Mizar is a smaller mountain located next to Mount Hermon. David is thought to have seen the Hermonites from this peak.

David is crippled with sickness. All his enemies are just waiting for him to die. He needs God's healing.

David explores themes of:

Morality - he asks God how long he will live. Says that life is short.

Silence - he says he will guard his mouth at all times. This way he does not question God.

Forgiveness - he asks to be forgiven and to be delivered from his suffering.

David feels the pain of sin and writes about it.

Answers the question why wicked prosper and the good suffer. David gives counsel for those who are afflicted because of their faith.

David compares the evil that is in the world with God's character.

David asks God to fight for him and destroy his enemies. He also asks God to bring shame and dishonor to those who go against him. He says that if God will do this, he will praise and honor Him for providing protection.

David wrote this thanking God for helping him escape the Philistines in Gath.
