With the cost of living soaring and a global recession afoot, people and businesses are already facing the consequences of cascading global crises. Crises which amounts to a perfect storm of falling incomes, rising prices, public service cuts, rising inequalities, lack of investment and more. Research has also shown employer investment in areas such as training has fallen sharply since 2005 risking nations such as the UK ‘sleepwalking into skills stagnation’.
While the war for talent has long been an issue (particularly in the tech sector) and the perils and pitfalls of short-term thinking long known - the unique challenges of today presents new existential risks for people and businesses within this changed global economy.
Today's guest, Michael Houlihan, CEO of Generation is working to fix some of the existential problems we witness whilst creating new pathways between education & employment.
Generation partners with companies to provide free, effective and intensive training programmes that transform education-to-employment systems, helping to prepare, place, and support people into meaningful, well-paid jobs that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Generation has partnered with The BlackRock Foundation, McKinsey & Company, Microsoft, Verizon and more to successfully tackle global unemployment, placing thousands of people into jobs that have generated more than $140 million in salary income to date. Working in over 16 countries, Generation has also been collaborating with Government and businesses to pinpoint where there are skills gaps, helping to train and reskill people who might have lost their jobs, were unable to access higher education, or who want to explore an entirely new career path.
During today's conversation we explore the importance of future conscious thinking and behaviours, why remote working and flexibility is key to economic growth, how older workers are assets, not liabilities coupled to a new pathway to a new generation and more.
I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Michael and we hope you do too.
Enjoy!

Looking at the challenges we face, as one of the richest nations in the world, and a government who have spent billions, how are we in this position whereby so many people are choosing between heating and eating?
This was the central question that initiated today’s episode as Craig Taylor (Gratitude), Juliet Davenport (Founder, Good Energy), Katy Chakrabortty (Oxfam), Morris Pearl (Patriotic Millionaires), Ryan Curtis-Johnson (The Valuable 500) and I (Purpose Made) explore:
1). The Challenges of the Cost-of-Living Crisis and Austerity
2). Thoughts on the Autumn Budget and
3). Solutions at hand driven by the discussion held
A central take home from today’s episode is we need to cultivate future-conscious thinking and behaviour, to build more hopeful visions of the future, and turn those visions into action, specifically:
- Transforming mindsets from reactionary short-termism to the long-term
- Widening our scope beyond today to tomorrow &
- Focus on the long path beyond the shortcut.
I really enjoyed this one and I hope you do too.
My hope is that the words spoken offer you a sense of perspective, that is honest and hopeful. But more than anything, my hope is that today’s episode will inspire you to act with us. As when you see what is possible, change is inevitable.
Enjoy!

Sir David Attenborough once said, “An understanding of the natural world is a source of not only great curiosity but great fulfilment.”
And so, surely it is our responsibility to do everything within our power to create, nurture and maintain a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth?
So why, here in the UK, is a deluge of untreated sewage being dumped by water companies into our rivers and along our coastlines?
Last year alone, there were a whopping 372,533 sewage spills, over a period of 2.7 million hours.
This is one of the BIGGEST environmental scandals of our time. Yet, as is always the case, it doesn't have to be this way.
This is why today we are joining forces with Hugo Tagholm to bring to you a deep dive into the world of marine conservation and critique the scandals we're witnessing on our shorelines.
Hugo served as Chief Exec of Surfers Against Sewage, one of the UK’s leading marine conservation and campaigning charities that have been instrumental in campaigning for the introduction and enforcement of legislation that protects our seas from pollution.
He also led partnerships at The Climate Coalition, and joined forces with Richard Haward’s Oysters and the Good Law Project, with the aim of compelling the Government to rewrite its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan to impose much tighter deadlines on water companies to clean up their act.
Tagholm has also served as Programme Director at Theirworld and is an esteemed TEDx speaker, columnist for Oceanographic Magazine, and avid surfer.
Earlier this year, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science for his services to marine conservation by the University of Exeter and has recently become the Exec Director and Vice President at Oceana, the largest international advocacy organisation dedicated solely to ocean conservation.
The crux of this wonderful conversation focuses on the majesty of our oceans, the tragedy of their decline and the urgency of change.
Chatting with Hugo was an absolute pleasure and my hope is that this one inspires you into your own form of action and activism —because we can't change the world without changing ourselves.
As always, the podcast is available on Apple, Acast, Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts.

In his book, The End of Poverty, Jeffrey Sachs made some careful estimates as to what it would cost to end extreme poverty in the world in about 20 years. Sachs calculated that the total cost per year would be about $175 billion. This represented less than one percent of the combined income of the richest countries in the world. In fact, this cost is 0.7% of the total income of the 30 countries who comprised OECD in 2005.
Fast forward to 2022, an estimated 698 million people, or 9% of the global population, are living in extreme poverty, with the overwhelming majority living on less than $1.90 a day. By 2030, 167 million children will live in extreme poverty if the world doesn’t act.
This is where my guest today comes in.
Esnatt Gondwe-Matekesa is a Development Practitioner at GiveDirectly. GiveDirectly is a non-profit that lets donors, like you, send money directly to the world’s poorest households.
Since 2009, they've delivered $580M+ in cash directly into the hands of over 1.37 million people living in poverty and currently have operations in DRC, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, USA, & Yemen.
During today's conversation we explore the work of GiveDirectly, Foreign aid, tax, governance and what the future holds.

Somewhere along the way you're likely to have heard the stat that one in every seven of us are living with a disability, making up the worlds biggest minority group. So why are disabled people twice as likely to be unemployed, underrepresented, excluded and still facing widespread discrimination?
Today I explore this terrain with the wonderful Joanne Pritchard, CEO of the Valuable 500.
The Valuable 500 is on a mission to use the power of business to drive lasting change for the 1.3 billion people around the world, living with a disability.
Supported by strategic partners, the Valuable 500 collaborates and connects together with companies such as: Allianz, Apple, BBC, Deloitte, EY, Google, LSEG, Mahindra, Microsoft, Omnicom, P&G, Salesforce, Sky, Sony, Verizon and others to drive change and strive to be inclusive by design.
As when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. It's all about actions, not just words.
And so, in order to join the Valuable 500, the CEO or leader of each of their companies have each made a personal commitment to action for disability inclusion.
This is what makes Valuable amazing – as they encourage companies to take tangible action.
Even the simplest action, has impact at scale, and as you'll soon discover, there is no limit to what can be achieved.
I really enjoyed talking with Joanna, her wisdom on this important subject is profound and I think this one just might leave you reevaluating your path and priorities in a positive way going forward. As when you see what is possible, change is inevitable ✌🏻🌿
Enjoy!

Everyday, healthcare workers demonstrate what it means to truly take care of others, but we can't forget that we need to take care of them too.
Today, healthcare professionals are faced with relentless scrutiny and gruelling hours inbuilt within systems at breaking point. According to Forbes, "Up to 47% Of U.S. Healthcare Workers Plan To Leave Their Positions By 2025" while poor mental health is endemic within the NHS. It's time to switch on the empathy switch rather than off.
In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Simon Maltais, a leading cardiac surgeon and author of the book, 'Healthcare Anonymous: Put Yourself First to Avoid Anxiety, Addiction and Burnout'.
Simon allows us to understand the history and struggles that our healthcare systems and professionals go through which have been compounded still further by the pandemic and recent waves of crises. In this eye-opening episode, Simon lays bare the real sources of anxiety, addiction, and burnout as he explains exactly how our healthcare systems and the way we interface with healthcare is creating a vicious cycle that directly impacts our entire system and what can be done to heal the pain.
During this episode we discuss:
This episode is aimed at shedding light on the challenges and trends our healthcare professionals are facing, and to identify the ways we can support them both now and in the future.

The Purpose Made Podcast explores where games, entertainment and ideas become worlds.
Hosted by Pete Bell, founder of Purpose Made and former Head of Strategic…
Games are our starting point. We go deeper into the IP we know and love, and into the ideas that make those worlds last. Many of the most important entertainment experiences of the next decade will begin as video games, then travel across film, television, publishing, sport, technology and culture. We look beyond the game itself: at the worlds underneath it, the franchises that can carry many stories, the businesses that bring them to audiences, and the choices that determine what lasts.
Guests include Shawn Layden (former Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios and President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America), Danny Bilson (writer of The Rocketeer and The Flash, and former THQ executive), Ken Levine (creator of BioShock), Tim Cain (co-creator of Fallout), Jeff Gomez (transmedia strategist and founder of Starlight Runner), Peter Levin (Managing Director and Co-Founder of Griffin Gaming Partners), Russell Binder (Partner at Striker Entertainment) and Richard Browne (games executive and publishing consultant), alongside the creators, operators and investors shaping what comes next.
The conversations explore franchise architecture, IP, studio and publishing economics, transmedia, creative leadership, technology, culture and the future of entertainment.
Purpose Made is for players, creators, studio leaders, publishers, investors and anyone who wants to understand the ideas shaping the next generation of entertainment.
