This week, I talk about which comes first: the reader or the message. Some other takeaways:

    * It’s helpful to have an umbrella topic and then a few “buckets” of content that all fall under that umbrella.

    * Your reader and message should be the overlap of what you are passionate about with the need that a reader has.

    * How you serve that reader also has to be the overlap of how you’re wired with where that reader goes to meet that need.

Maybe you want to land a traditional publishing contract, but you’ve been told that your platform isn’t big enough. How do you raise those numbers without becoming a slave to them?

In this episode, I talk about

    * the perspective shift that changes everything

    * how thinking outside the box can bring you freedom

    * that a traditional book deal isn’t the only path to a fulfilling writing life

Tell me in the comments what your next steps are.

  • Episode 26: Journey to Clarity with Kristin Vanderlip

The Purposeful Pen is now on Substack! Subscribe to be notified when a new episode comes out.

In this episode, I talk with Kristin Vanderlip about her journey to clarity. Some highlights…

    * Our message frequently comes from what we’ve lived through.

    * At what does point does “writing for your audience” or trying to get an agent cause us to lean toward people-pleasing?

    * It’s easy to become a slave to the numbers and lose the joy of creating.

Kristin Vanderlip is a writer and writing coach who is passionate about spreading the love of writing as a source of healing and hope. She is the author of Rest: A Journal for Lament and the founder of the Pen & Mend Collective. Kristin, her husband, and two sons currently call California’s Bay Area home. When she’s not writing or journaling, Kristin enjoys creating oil pastel paintings and spending time with her family outdoors.
