Welcome to the Qualified Tutor Podcast
After the success of our first cohort of qualified tutors, we speak to Victoria Gibbs, Manager at Tutors International, about her experiences of the course and her thoughts on the direction of tutoring in today's society.
With many years of working in the tutoring industry, Victoria is acutely aware of, firstly, the need for tutors in the education sector and secondly, the skills that make a successful tutor. Placing tutors in long-term residential jobs is a tricky business and requires a deep understanding of what the client is seeking and the precise skills and experience of the tutor.
Dotted with wonderful anecdotes from Victoria's school career, including the infamous fox puppet Politics teacher, we discuss what makes an effective tutor and how young tutors starting out in the industry can prepare themselves for their line of work.
One of the principal themes is that of Continuous Professional Development, which is so important for a tutor to be constantly seeking out and developing. Victoria's experiences on the QT course has allowed her to improve her wide knowledge of potential CPD routes for tutors and educators ... and QT has certainly grabbed her attention!
If you would like to gain greater exposure into what tutoring really means and if you'd like to level up your ability, earning power and expertise as a tutor, enrol now at https://www.qualifiedtutor.org/qt-training and sign up for the Qualified Tutor Course. Over 8 hours of workshop-style sessions with industry experts, you'll set yourself apart in a crowded space.
We can't wait to see you there.
The QT Podcast exists for those tutors about to take the plunge into the profession, for those that already have but want to strengthen their practice or simply for those in education who love hearing about what others are doing and what tips they can take from it. We are all constantly learning and there is no better place right now to hear about the developments in e-learning and education through tutoring than The QT Podcast.

This week, our first cohort of Qualified Tutors graduated after completing 4 weeks of close learning and interactive live discussion.
Dan Wardle: Business Studies BA, University of Leeds
Victoria Gibbs: Tutoring Agency Manager
Eli Baigel: Teach First teacher
Rose Matthews: Biochemistry MSc, University of Oxford
Lachie Ayles: University of Oxford graduate
Evie Miller: English Literature MA
Claire Cant: Teaching Assistant and Tutor
Helen Kenworthy: Director, The Complete Works
Omaria Haq: Founder, Perfect Score Tuition
We spoke to them to hear their thoughts on what they'd learnt, the connections they'd formed and the knowledge and tools they'll take on into their future tutoring sessions. We were blessed with a wonderful group of tutors, teachers and education experts and the diverse range of experience and specialisms allowed for a rich and vibrant discussion each and every workshop.
The feedback we've received has been exceptional and we as the course facilitators and writers have learnt a great deal about our methods of delivery, discussion and training.
The message time and time again has been that the live interactive nature of the workshops, held on Zoom, has allowed for a collaborative approach to the learning, an aspect rendered impossible with pre-recorded courses. This element, coupled with the rigorous pedagogical background, has come together to create a vibrant and engaging environment for building your professional skills as a tutor.

Welcome to The Qualified Tutor Podcast.
If you weren't already aware of it, the lockdown period has pushed tutoring to the level of national and international consciousness. Digital skills and a competence in EdTech are essential to any educator, be it tutor, teacher or course deliverer.
Vikki Liogier, National Head of EdTech & Digital Skills at the Education & Training Foundation, has known this for years, perhaps longer than almost anyone in the industry. Vikki bought her first Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator pack in 1993 and hasn't looked back since. She brings with her extensive expertise in how to implement EdTech into the learning environment and how to learn digital skills to master your all-round teaching ability.
We are incredibly lucky, as we so often are, to have spoken to Vikki about her experiences, her ethos and her current work promoting digital learning to as many students and teachers as possible.
The conversation answers the queries and issues of online tutors and teachers out there that it could almost have been a direct Q&A. Ranging from the core skills that all online educators must possess to how organisations like ETF are using EdTech to enhance the current school curriculum, our chat covers a huge number of topics so get listening and do spread to anyone you know involved in EdTech and the digital learning environment!

Welcome to The Qualified Tutor Podcast
We're continuing the rich stream of music in education in recent episodes, giving educators from many fields the inspiration of hearing how powerful music can be in liberating students' intellectual creativity and giving them a voice.
We were lucky enough to be joined by two of the incredible team at Play for Progress, a wonderful charity supporting socially-isolated refugee students and minors. Anna MacDonald, Head of Relationships, and Simon Roth, Senior Music Tutor and percussion expert, took us through a profound explanation of what working to improve a child's confidence through music truly means.
Working with the most deprived and traumatised children is not an easy task, Simon and Anna admitted this honestly, and the organisation's success is testament to the commitment, vision and expertise of the whole team.
As with many guests we get the chance to speak to on the show, the hard work pays off through the rewarding experience of seeing students understand a point or work to inspire one another. In another heartwarming conversation, we feel grateful that we are spreading this inspiring message to as wide an audience as possible.
Catch Play for Progress' #liveatfive Facebook stream with the organisation's Allies in Art (artistic and musical contributors and professionals), as well as their Friday evening kids' classes.

Welcome to The Qualified Tutor Podcast
Over the past few episodes, we've heard how important music is in educating students, not only in giving them a voice to be heard but also in creating fun, refreshing ways for the standard academic content to be covered.
Joined by Anna and Harrison from Orchestras For All, Head of Programmes and NOFA Ambassador respectively, we were able to have an absorbing discussion, ranging from how organisations such as OFA and QT can cater for the recent shift in education to how Harrison has been able to continue concert practice from his own bedroom.
Orchestra For All are a charity who provide amazing opportunities for young people to get involved with music and experience the world of live music and performance. Many of those who take part would otherwise never have been able to access music in this way and, as such a powerful force in education, the benefits and rewards that music brings to those working with OFA are enormous.
OFA are always looking to push the boundaries of orchestral music-making and their ambition and drive is a wonderful addition to the list of guests we've had on the show so far, including Matt Mazur of Turtle Dance Music, and our next guests, Play for Progress.

Welcome to The Qualified Tutor Podcast
Action Tutoring is a heavyweight of the tutoring world and we are incredibly lucky, as we so often are, to have had the chance to speak to Susannah Hardyman, Founder of the organisation.
Susannah is in an almost unrivalled position to comment on the current situation of the education system, on the importance of tutors to students and parents around the country and on the significant impact that one-to-one tuition can have on a student's success and self-confidence. Susannah tutored for many years towards the end of her school days, into her university and after graduating. After working alongside this in the charitable sector, she set up Action Tutoring as a way to open up the affluent and elite world of private tuition to the thousands of students who needed it most - and today, she has made this a reality.
Volunteering as a tutor is the most rewarding role in the industry, because of the difference you make. It's a cliché but it's a cliché for a reason. For all of our listeners and community base who are tutors themselves, please do consider signing up with Action Tutoring or one of the other many volunteer tutoring charities, and make the difference that your ability has made you able to.
Qualified Tutor is a tutor-training organisation, with a suite of high-quality, industry-first programmes. The Level 3 Qualification for Tutors (qualifiedtutor.org/training/level-3-qualification-for-tutors/) consists of 8 weeks of online learning, interactive live sessions with peers and expert facilitation at every step of the way, and will set you apart in a crowded space.
Our CPD-Accredited Tutor Training (qualifiedtutor.org/training/online-tutor-training-seminar/) is a 4-week course in teaching and learning, and comes with a Certificate of Completion and a teaching qualification that many tutors will never have had the chance to obtain. Be the first to take the next step in tutoring.
We can't wait to see you there.

Welcome to The Qualified Tutor Podcast
To try and get a better understanding of the situation in schools during this time, this week we're speaking to Mordechai Keet, a 6th form student whose A-level preparations have been severely disrupted by the enforced school closures. Mordechai is a committed and engaging student with big plans for the future and here, he is able to give a brilliant new take on the situation.
At the heart of this disruption is the pupils themselves, whose short- and long-term futures have been threatened by the lack of exams, clarity and confidence. Mordechai admits honestly that he is nervous about the grades his teachers will give him for his final-year exams and what this could mean for university entrance and beyond.
We hope this is the first of many conversations we have with students on The Qualified Tutor Podcast, as their voices are often forgotten in and amongst the higher-level education system planning. We are here to listen to students, to parents and to tutors and the community we're building will be a vibrant soundboard of the ideas of all three groups, and more.
