Mark 2:13–14 (NKJV)
Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them.
As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.
“When a Jew entered the customs service he was regarded as an outcast from society: he was disqualified as a judge or a witness in a court session, was excommunicated from the synagogue, and in the eyes of the community his disgrace extended to his family.” (Lane)
And yet Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.” I love that Jesus isn’t swayed by outward appearances.
On the outside, Matthew (Levi) may have appeared comfortable, wealthy, and in need of nothing. But Jesus saw deeper. Thankfully, He always sees deeper.
Where were you when Jesus called you?
Jesus was nowhere on my radar when He found me, yet I was on His — just as you were, and still are. What grace we receive as we walk with Him.
He called us in our need, and He continues to call us into fellowship with Himself.
This episode was recorded on a very rainy day here in Northern California, and it seemed fitting to close with a rainy-day recording of "Amazing Grace" — a reminder of how He found us and how He continues with us.
